The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Gamespot review gave this a 7.5/10. I hope they are trolling and its better than that...

Weird - maybe their Wii is broken as they said the controls were a bit borked. All other reviews I have read say they are a revelation.

Maybe they are not hardcore Zelda fans.

That is another title recently that Gamespot have done which goes against the general trend - forgotten whioh it is but I know I read one recently.

Pleasantly surprised to find my pre-order from Tesco turned up today when I got home. Funnily enough I only got the despatch email yesterday, yet it was sent using 2nd class. Admittedly I received the email at 00:02 yesterday, so I guess it was actually sent at some point on Tuesday. Still, quite chuffed considering the horror stories I've read about Tesco and pre-orders.

I was actually contemplating getting a wii for this until I read about the dreaded 'fetch quests'. There is nothing more cheap in a Zelda game than an infuriating and pointless fetch quest, or equally irritating, a 'fight all the bosses again'.

The worst example was windwaker - finding the treasure maps and the pieces of the triforce was simply unforgivable and ruined an otherwise brilliant game. TP also had this to an extent but with dungeons - half of them were brilliant, others were really boring.

Now I don't know what to think.

Have given it a bit more time and it does improve a bit but I'm still not sold on the controls at all.

Not really sure as yet that Motionplus adds much, the sword swiping doesn't let you be that accurate, as far as I can tell, you only get to swipe in up/down, left/right or diagonal movements on screen, there's no degree of diagonal if that makes sense? It's either horizontal, vertical or diagonal. The only time it seems more accurate is when it forces you to point the sword upwards to 'charge' it up and that's then a pain because a tiny wobble and it resets.

As with other wii games, the detection for thrusting the nunchuk or wiimote forwards is flaky and right now I almost wish they'd just used a regular control setup, I can't help but feel I am going to find this challenging/frustrating because of the controls not the game itself.

Hoping that some other people on here put in the hours and love it so that entices me back, right now I'm actually leaning towards agreeing with the Gamespot review and I usually avoid that site like the plague. It just doesn't feel as fresh as I'd hoped so far and the few new things they have added just haven't clicked with me, the flying and 'dowsing' both feel like unnecessary add-ons and again are hampered by the controls.

I have played and loved every Zelda game so far so I will finish this at some point but I'm glad I didn't buy a Wii just for this (I bought one for Xenoblade Chronicles which is awesome!).

Played for a few hours, seems average. Agree with ricky1981 about the controls and the graphics are quite awful - N64 level textures on the buildings. I may be a bit too harsh on the graphics since I've been playing skyrim on pc. Hope it gets better...

Forgot to tell you guys but my copy turned up yesterday! YES THE 16th!!!
Could only play it a tiny bit last night, completed first dungeon today though and I tend to take longer I recon as I like to try and explore the place.

My LE turned up yesterday so I set myself up for a nice day of Zelda and evening of Saints Row 3!

My First thoughts:

Game - Simply outstanding. Cannot get enough of it. From the A* dialogue between the characters to the motion controls. I do understand what some say here about them, and do realise its essentially all trick of the mind. It has pre-determined slicing actions and you simply swing roughly in the location you want it to go and it'll do it.
In terms of story, its Zelda through and through. Has that magical feeling about it that simply oozes Nintendo quality. Cannot wait to get home and continue playing it. My one and only gripe is the "Raise Sheild" function. You have to shake the nunchuck in order for this to activate. I'd much rather this to be a button, but its no biggy, ill get used to it.

Soundtrack CD - Perfection. Pure perfection in printed CD Format. My standout track is the Gerudo Valley Theme from Ocarina of Time. Every song on the CD is simply amazing though. My one and only gripe with this though, is that theres only 8 songs! It needs to be more! They need to release a 2-CD, 3-CD, hell even a 10-CD of all the Zelda music through the years in the Orchestra Format!

Overall I'm blown away by it. The Gold WiiMote is nice and feels good in the hands. The game itself will keep me entertained for months to come and the soundtrack CD will be played enroute to work for a long time.

(Please note I am a massive Zelda Fanboy so the above comments may sound slightly biased!)

Tempted to pick it up on the way home... but i've so many other games atm...

I've only done first 2 missions of MW3... i'm busy with BF3 MP... i've got Forza career still to finish... and i've got RAGE sat on my desk unopened... :o

I've got the same issue, with the added problem of having to buy a Wii for it as well! Still think I'll pick it up tonight though :D

Anybody else have to calibrate the motion plus each time? I'm sure it selected it as being an all in one controller on first set up, but it keeps talking about the "wii motion plus accesorie" Is this just the standard phrase?

Amazon have a deal on the Wii at the moment, £89 with 2 games.

It calibrates each time you start the game yeah.

Brilliant game, but is there a way to make the text in dialogues appear faster? Holding the A button works slightly but I want the text to just appear in one go. In previous games you could skip the text very quickly if you had spoken to them before.

I really need to skip some of the stuff the skyward sword spirit or whatever says, she/he is really time wasting sometimes!
