The MacBooks are out!

I just gave TNT a call. Should definately be here on Wednesday. Matt, did you customise yours?

Yes. It has the 1gig upgrade and DVI adapter. Though i also ordered on Wednesday, rather than Tuesday.

There are a lot of reports of these being stuck in China, and i'm now assuming mine is stuck too.

Apple delivery really is a dissapointment, i am suprised they don't have a stock point in Europe. US customers seem to be getting their Macbook a few days after order, whereas UK customers have a week or two of waiting.

punky_munky, what does your TNT tracker page show?

It says "please call".

When I phoned up they said "Apple, right?" and I imagine they looked like this  They said my Macbook is somewhere in Europe (gee, thanks) but it will definately arrive in Plymouth on Wednesday (hopefully that means my house).

I guess because I ordered an off the shelf one within an hour or so of it being announced I'm somewhere near the front of the line for UK orders.

I said exactly the same thing when I ordered my Macbook Pro. I find it rather weird that they ship directly from China. Seems bizarre.

The China to Amsterdam leg of the trip is handled by a compnay called Kuehne+Nagel. For this part of the journey you can pretty much throw any thing that is said on the TNT tracking out the window as there appears to be no correlation what so ever. Mine said it was sat in Shanghai for 3 days. When I rang TNT it had actually made it to Europe way before then.

Once it reaches Arnham in Amsterdam it updates pretty much real time.

cheers.

now shall i order one or not? :p

Go for it dude

I was pondering for ages whether to get one, if i really needed one or not, and what use i'd actually have for it

But who cares, i wanted one and for that much im gonna make sure i find some use for it, and being able to do work on the train and back at home during the holidays without having to lug my pc about is worth that money alone

the fact that they look fantastic is an added bonus

Well they have in stock at Meadowhall but they cant offer the HE discount in store - best they cna do in store is the student discount at £967.

If i order it online it means having to wait a week or so,although i do save £80.

I want it now though, lol. :p Wish Apple stores could offer the HE discount as i could go and pick it up this evening.

Don't they give you the same discount as the NUS/HE discount online then? I used my NUS card in the Apple store in the Bullring Birmingham and I got a discount on my iPod nano.

the discount they offer with a NUS card is less than the HE discount that you can get from a uni netork.

Black MacBook with NUS discount is £967, whereas ordering from the uni network with a HE discount is £884 - which is a pretty hefty discount!

This is getting boring. People have opened their Macbook's and it's been nowhere near as bad as that image makes out.

Sorry if it's boring for you. I only recently spotted it. Obviously good to hear if the problems are worse than people have made out.

If they released a revision of the Macbook Pro with the keyboard styling of the regular Macbook, and not that horrible "squashed-at-the-top" keyboard styling, I would buy buy buy, but as it stands Im finding myself holding off :(

The regular Macbook certainly has the nicer looks

How would a MacBook (base model) perform in Windows compared to my current laptop with the following spec:

Toshiba [Not sure on model number]
Intel Centrino 1.7Ghz
512Mb DDR
GeForceFX 5200 Graphics Card
60Gb Hard Drive
DVD+-RW
Built-in Wireless
Built-in Cardreader
15.4" Widescreen

Thinking of making the switch but don't want to lose performance and also whats the battery life like?

Thanks in advance,

BeatMaster :D

EDIT:

Incase anyone wonders that startup speed of a MacBook, click here for a video. Also if anyone has a PowerBook and wishes to compare boot times, also click here

Remember that running Windows on a MacBook (Pro) is still Beta. I would assume that over time Apple and 3rd Party Comps will refine drivers and what not so that Windows is just as fast as your standard x86 Laptop.

Wonder how they perform on the MacBook (non-Pro)?
