The MacBooks are out!

I have ordere done with 512mb of Ram, I think 1gb and a 7200rpm HDD are in order, can you do it withou apple telling youve been there (warrenty) and how easy is it. Also which HDD's and ram have people found to work well.

how easy is it to stick in? I dont want to void my warrenty really.

Very easy, you just take the battery out, unscrew 3 (very small) screws and pop the exisiting ram out using the levers. Then insert your new RAM and screw the screws back in.

It is very simple.

cool might get some then, is any DDR2 ram compatible, or do some have issues.

Needs DDR2 667Mhz SODIMMs. I went with the Apple stuff for my MBP as it was the same price as the box shifters wanted for generic. 512Mb is good value, 1Gb parts are overpriced at the moment.

I saved over £200 by not getting my RAM from Apple.

I paid £45 back in March for a 512Mb chip. The 1Gb one's were £180 at the time. As I said the 1Gb one's are overpriced....

hi,
thinking about getting a macbook, so am i right in thinking its better to get jus the standard 512ram and then upgrade yourself rather than selecting the 1gig or 2 gig option from apple?

Well if you feel confident in installing the RAM yourself then go for it. It will save you a lot of cash.

It's no harder than installing RAM in a normal PC, just make sure you push it in really hard... I've heard of people using wooden spoons.

That is the one mistake I made, I didnt push the RAM in hard enough. I also had a bit of a problem getting the small foam support that sits round the metal you remove to go back into the RAM recesses.

All in all, it wasnt to painfull.

Installing more RAM or a new HDD doesn't void the warrenty because Apple clearly states that they are upgradable. You only need access to the battery compartment to upgrade too so it's not like your taking apart the case or having to remove the keyboard.

it finally arrived this morning!
