** The Macworld '09 Thread **

Is this really an issue though? I mean every laptop that I have owned when I've come around to replacing the battery, the cost of just the battery is usually pushing £100 quid, so $179 doesn't seem too bad. So it seems to me the only inconvenience is the time to get it changed, and the fact you can't use the old battery as a spare.

It's an issue, yes.

The cost is acceptable, but there is no Apple store in Wales, only premium resellers. This means that I'd have to send my entire machine to Apple while they pop in a new battery (a 25 minute job at most).

I'm uncomfortable with that, and don't think it's a sacrifice that should have to be made.

@ OllyM.. I'll bet you anything that the new MBP lasts 5hrs, 6hrs at most (using discrete gfx).

The 15" MBP is stated to last 5hrs on battery, but rarely lasts longer than 3:30hrs with real world usage (and I've found this to be true of my machine) so my numbers are based on the same patterns.

I think it is worth it.

Substantially longer battery life day in, day out, trumps the inconvienience (if and when it happens) of getting the battery replaced. Just use a another computer.

The bad aspect is making RAM / HDD replacement harder.

The battery life is the best thing, no doubt, (I actually was godsmacked by their claims) but the fact is they touted the user-accessible upgrades on the unibodys then pull a move like this boggles my mind.

I'm against it because I'd rather not send my machine away, and I think the current unibodys sport a design that doesn't compromise on user upgradability (something they took years in implementing!).

Never had issues with my batteries in notebooks, but I'd hate to be bitten by this one.

It was a fairly disappointing Macworld this year. Only new Hardware was the 17" MBP, and Software yas the yearly iLife and iWork. I was hoping to see a new/updated MacMini, Apple TV, 32gb iPhone, MBA facelift to match MB/MBP, iMac/Mac Pro spec updates... and Snow Leopard. Never mind - I suspect they'll all appear over the course of the year. :)

I really don't see the problem with the non removeable battery - it makes for a more solid laptop, they've squeezed a better battery with more life into the same space that lasts longer. Realistically, it should easily last the serviceable life of the laptop if Apples claims are anywhere near accurate. Once it's out of warranty, it's an easy replacement for a competent individual anyway (look at the MBA as an example - all of the Unibody portables are very easy to get into).

Bring on non user replaceable batteries if they can last properly - it makes for better looking and better built products. I'd hate to see iPhones/iPods with silly battery flaps. :)

I'm going out on a limb here, but the Mac's 25th anniversary is coming up (January 24, 2009) and if Apple want to wow people with a whole new range of Macs this'll be the time. Not only that, they can do it at the Apple campus for maximum profit.

Mark my words..

Well at least a new Mac Mini at any rate!
