Favourite metal album this year is: Kostnatění - Úpal
A fascinating album by a one-man black metal project, incorporating Eastern-style melody by the bucketload. It could have been produced in the charred remains of a Norwegian church, or somewhere in the Levant. The vocals are maleficent and not overbearing and both the drum and bass sit a little lower, giving full star status to the guitarwork. Tinny and angular, willfully shooting off in any direction and at any time, yet with a phenomenal sense of melody. It feels organic rather than submission by technique.
If opener 'Řemen' sets the scene, the sixth track 'Nevolnost je vše, čím jsem' may be my favourite. Vocals are in Czech.

Not sure if this is the right thread since they are post rock rather than metal, but probably the closest since there's going to be some crossover in fans

Yes LOTL had some amazing releases right up to and including Thornstar (Plus the Swan Songs II and III) and then, er, the more recent stuff exists I suppose. Just can't gel with it vs their back catalogue. Also check out La Bomba if you want proper odd stuff from them.
