* The Metal Thread *

Machine Head, maybe In Flames, a dash of Dream Theater.

I rediscovered In Flames earlier, Clayman is such a good song but I can't stand their latest album, it sounds totally different.

I have also gotten into Thou Shalt Suffer, very few songs and it's strange to hear the main driving forces behind Emperor doing Death Metal. (Ihsahn, the vocalist was only like 15 when this was recorded too, wth)

Anyone here a fan of Darkthrone? I'm generally a fan of Black Metal but a lot of the bands can be quite OTT, Darkthrone on the other hand are more understated in my opinion.

Darkthrone are alright, I don't like the raw black metal sound all that much though and much prefer the likes of Mayhem and Emperor.

Compare these;

From around the same time, really not a fan of Darkthrone production. :z

Dissection are also great.

I think Emperor are the best of Black Metal though. :D

Ive found myself listening to In Flames and Soilwork's older albums again, stuff like 'Only for the weak' and 'No more angels' are bloody good songs!

I love old In Flames / Soilwork, I was really hyped for Sworn to a Great Divide but me and my friend were really disappointed with it. :( I hear they have their old guitarist back so new album could be promising.

Some bands I discovered thanks to Last.fm

I already knew about Immortal but never bothered with the first two albums until someone recommended them to me on Last.fm, very good love the drumming. :cool:

Haha yeah I got that bit - and I am a fan, mostly of the likes of Metallica, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Firewind and lately been listening to Five Finger Death Punch (a bit redneck but for one reason or another it appeals) and also Killswitch Engage (the new stuff as opposed to the old).

Never got into the whole tryhard paint your face death/horror/closet desire to wear mommies makeup so I paint my face drivvel that seems to come out of the Nordics these days. I quite like to understand what is being sung and having it in a melodic audible fashion. The death/horror thing seems a bit like they're trying to compensate for something...

Immortal aren't about the death/horror thing, all of the lyrics are about a fictional land, most of them are to do with cold and frost. (infact most of the best black metal bands aren't)

As for the paint, I don't know really it's just what they do, they can pull it off at least as they were one of the first bands to do it.

The lead singer/guitarist of Immortal is actually hilarious :D ;

By the way I can understand everything in Immortal songs, it just takes getting used to.
The Nordics make great music that's for sure.

Sounds lyrically a little like 3 Inches of Blood - dunno muscially Immortal don't sound that accomplished. Each to their own I guess :D

3 Inches of Blood vocals are kind of odd, they get annoying after a bit, Immortal are awesome though, they have great instrumental sections especially in the song Tyrants where an amazing synth kicks in.

Amazingly atmospheric intro.

Haha Black metal spoofs are awesome. Transilvanian Hunger by Darkthrone but alternate lyrics :D

I just can't get into Darkthrone, I like other black metal bands such as Mayhem, Emperor, Enslaved and Immortal but no matter how hard I try Darkthrone just do nothing for me.

They all have considerably different sounds though, I'd say Enslaved sound the most similar to Darkthrone but even that is far off.

I think it is the production of Darkthrone I dislike...but Emperor have raw stuff like that, that I enjoy, not sure really.

Never liked any of his solo stuff until this new-ish album. Better than the past stuff in every way. Saxometal!

It's a fun song to listen to, if you like that you might as well check out the following Emperor live album because the vocals are very similar. It's the same guy and his voice is pretty much the same in this live Emperor album, that said his voice is very, very different now than what it used to be like on the earlier Emperor releases, mostly due to the production but anyway it's still good stuff.

I don't like them, a lot of their songs just sound so random.

That song sounded terrible. :o I actually quite liked one of their older albums though.

Edit: I am liking Behemoth a lot lately.

The new Soilwork album is much better than the last album but I don't think they are as good as they used to be. Natural Born Chaos and Stabbing the Drama were great albums but the last two...not quite up there.

Totally digging Bathory these days.

Blotted Science anyone? Ron Jarzombek is the man!:D

:D Alex Webster is also the man! I love his bass playing. :)

Hate the vocals in that song but Webster plays a catchy bit of bass!

I think that song would have been much better if it had vocals more similar to those in this song:

You can actually understand that.

The new album is awesome -

I think they went downhill after that Hate Crew Deathroll album, think that's what it was called anyway.

I've been enjoying Dimmu Borgir lately but they were another band that sort of went downhill later on, the most recent album they put out was naff and the one before it was a bit...meh.

Clean vocals and the keyboard work are both great in that song, shame the guy that does the vocals is out the band now.
