So I'm currently at uni in Loughborough, and in 2 years time when I finally graduate, I'm going to be looking for a job in the midlands, as thats where 99% of the engineering jobs are.

My girlfriend who is currently working in London is reluctantly going to move up and pick up a financial role that will get her chartership.

My question is: Best places to live in the midlands?
 
East or west?

Stratford up Avon, Solihull, Cotswolds, all nice places, surely depends on where you'll be working though?

East. It is dependent yes, not fixing down to anywhere, just getting ideas. I'll likely be working in the daventry/Gaydon/Northampton kind of zone.

It has crossed my mind, but she's always said she'd come to me. Her job is more transferable too, there's a lack of engineering jobs in London.

What engineering line are you going into? I'm studying at Notts and anyone that's come in to visit or careers fairs and any placements online hardly any are in the Midlands.
 
other option - if you get a job in Brum then move somewhere on the Chiltern line midway between Birmingham and London so she doesn't have to switch jobs...
 
If Gaydon (i.e. JLR basically) then Stratford is a great town to live in. Not exactly got the night life of London, but a really nice place to live and lots of good pubs which have a good atmosphere in the evening.

What kind of engineer are you? There are plenty of engineering jobs in London. The midlands does not have "99%" of the engineering jobs in the country!
 
East Mids - It's a nice area, lots of nice countryside to go walking and some decent cities to go shop/visit/drink - namely Nottingham & Lincoln. The housing is cheap! My 3 bed detached cost me £125k :) Lots of nice villages to settle in too.

There is a lack of engineering jobs but it is a lot better than it used to be. There are also a good amount of engineering companies near to London. Most of the UKs space industry is very close to London. I've been working near London and living in London for many years now. I've worked in aero and automotive sectors. Now I work in central London in additive manufacturing. I've really noticed over the last few years that the amount of companies has increased greatly.
