The Most Important PC Game Ever

Monkey Island.

Sadly, I disagree, purely because point and click adventure games are almost a totally dead genre. While the Monkey Island was a truely fantastic game, and certainly genre-defining, its sadly the finest of a dead/dying breed.

Definitely for me the answer has to be Civilisation. A lot of people think modding started with FPS games but actually Civ2 was one of the first and most moddable games of all time. That came out in 1996 :)

Civilisation 1 revolutionised PC gaming. It created addictive strategy that also taught people history at the same time.

Sure wolf3D and doom created FPS games and C&C created RTS games but no one can argue that Civilisation wasn't the most important of them all. It gave birth to the thinking mans computer games. From that moment on no one could say that computer games were for kids!

For defining the PC as a possible gaming device rather than just a business machine...Doom probably. For taking it to the next level...Half Life.

Very broad subject though, probably needs to be broken down into genre.

Given that 1996 is later than years such as 1995 and 1994 (when numerous Doom(2) mods were released), it's easy to see why people might think that :) Even then I'm sure there's other games which were heavily moddable long before.

Transport tycoon imo.

Agreed, i was going to say theme park/sim city as thats what brought management sims to the mass's, and ultimately led to games like The Sims.

There cant ever be an all time important pc game as there are far to many genres to pin point it to one game.

Elite gets it in my book, it proved just what could be done with some clever programming

Ah but were the modding communities as big or long lasting? There were still mods being made for civ2 right up to 2002 and beyond when Civ3 was released.

And these mods could change every single element of the game right down to the fundamental rules and all this in simple and easy to change text and image files. I still say civ2 gave birth to true large scale modding.

Wasen't Ultima Online the first MMPOG? If so WOW was just evolutionary not revolutionary.
Even if it was evolutionary, it doesn't stop it being more important than it's predecessors. WoW brought MMORPGs to the masses. It still hasn't got me yet though ;)

Chucky Egg - 1st addictive game worth playing.

Eilte - good 3D space game, 1st game where you lost hours/days of your life.

REVS - great amiga racing game, with multiplayer on the same computer.

The game where your a god, raising and lowering land to make your people better, where they prayed to you and you gained powers, before B&W, can not remeber the name

C&C - good RTS game.

EVE/WOW - shows what a online game should be.

To name a few classics.

Chucky Egg! What a lush game!!!

I remember when my mate asked for Doom 2 for Christmas. His Dad got hime Dune 2 instead!

Was very disappointed at first but soon realised what an excellent mistake it was!

I say Wolvenstein.

I was probably one of the first titles that was first and formost a PC game.

I also lead to Doom and Quake which both massively sucessful games.

Games like sensible soccer, leisure suite larry or monkey island, were first and formost Amiga games with PC versions also available.

Wolvenstein was arround the point where the PC moved ahead of the Amiga and Atari ST as a machine for gaming.

I'd also say Transport Tycoon, it's a brilliant game, and it's of a Genre that' never translated well to consoles.

simple and yes there is an awnser doom. It's what kicked of 3d gaming. without it gaming would never off exploded like it did.

Whilst i agree Quake was important, saying that gaming would never have exploded without it is just silly. If iD hadn't done it, then someone else would have and we would be in the same position as we are today. Albeit maybe a year or so less progressed in gaming terms.

I think there are simply hundreds of genre/system defining games that could and should be included. It is impossible to pick a single one as is evident in this thread.
