The most important value is...?

One other thing I would like to say before I got to bed is that the OP has fielded an excellent and interesting thread and hopefully it is still alive toward the end of the week when I have more time to give it the attention it deserves.

Speakers Corner seems to be a better place for it so it doesn't get lost in all the usual GD stuff.

Well done Ahleckz. :)

Hmm...

I'm not sure where I could go with this, but I would say there is no all-meaning human aspect, or personality aspect, or value. Without having some sort of balance, everything in it's time will fail. We must balance compassion with it's opposite, as hate balances love. Without the negative the positive would have no meaning, and therefore life would be meaningless.

Christ, I need to stop thinking like this at 1 am :D

For me... integrity. Evrything else eventually falls but if I can stand tall with integrity then I will have no regrets.

Humanism is a approach in study, philosophy or practice that focuses on human values and concerns.
Basically, human values and concerns are the most important thing (contrast it to religion/anarchism/etc)

How do you sell an ideology?

Still i'm sure it's very human of these people to spend hundreds of thousands/millions of pounds on tv advertising rather than using that vast sum of money to do some good in the world :)

just because we need a balance of everything doesn't mean there can't be 1 value held in higher esteem than others. OP's question wasn't to choose 1 value that encompassed everything and was all we needed, he just wanted to brag about being in a commercial or something like that  heheh.

More importantly wouldn't the most important value be '42', it's the meaning of life isn't it?

Although if there is a value that gets rid of hangovers I would be persuaded to change my mind at this stage...

Why do you say that? Without getting too far into utilitarianism, would it not be better to compromise your believes and change your actions from the norm in order to achieve a positive outcome for others? Or do you believe that remaining true to yourself is the upmost important thing? If so, why?

Elaborate men (and women!), elaborate!

Yes, I think that remaining true to yourself is the most important thing. If you do what you believe to be right, even if others don't think it's right, then I think that is an important value. What the worst thing people can do is to do something that they believe to be wrong.

That is why I picked integrity, because if you have integrity, your intentions are always good, and even if someone doesn't agree with the outcome, your actions were not intended to do evil, but to do good.

you can have integrity but still be evil just so long as you're consistent and honest to your chosen moral code.

Nothing to do with goodness.

The ability to lie convincingly.

.......is the most important lesson in life.

or conversely the ability to understand that 90% of the people you meet will try to screw you over for their own benefit plus also understanding that you are no different and will probably try to screw them over too. A twisted kind of humility I guess.
