The National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom

(<<< see location). Considered and been looking at Ruger SR22 pistols to learn shooting. The general unreliability of .22 ammo is irritating though, as nice as that pistol is.

A few people at the club have semi auto.22 pistols. Not seen reliability issues, but in general (the couple I fired) the accuracy is terrible.

Even trying to rest it at 25 yards.

You've also got very little recoil, honestly (particularly assuming your laws are far less ridiculous than ours) just pick up a 9mm or similar, .45acp is supposed to be popular there?

Good fun to shoot.

Just saw the spec me a rifle thread and was surprised there isn't an NRA thread in GD. Any one a member? A good friend (forum user but never posts) just joined and did his first of 6 probationary sessions. We both have a casual interest in guns and would both love to learn and get proper accreditation so we can visit ranges etc.

His first session sounded lively - someone drove into the building, someone brought their partner along who by the sounds of it - practically crapped their pants every time they shot and someone caught his finger in a rifle and was spewing blood everywhere :cry::cry::cry::cry:.

So any members, if so, experiences of the NRA and going to ranges.
NRA in UK is National Rivers Authority isn't it? (not trying to be sarcastic I genuinely thought it was)

I am a newbie shooter, so .22 to work on technique and basics. 9mm or similar when I am finally comfortable owning something for home defense (I.e. i consider it sensible to make sure I educate myself on correct usage (and law!) and don't act in panic).

Well that’s my plan for the next two weeks probably gone up in smoke…

Thinking I might get one of these next:

Marlin (now made by Ruger) 1894 in .44 mag.

But I think I will replace the lever with the more regular small version and probably spray the stock black, then put a red dot or holo sight.

Chronographed the ruger today, that's shooting .44 magnum 240 gn.

That's with a medium (ish) load, reckon I could get that up to 1600, maybe....

Wow, that’s a lovely bright range. A step up from the dingy places I used to shoot at. The first ever match I did was the Brighton Icebreaker and those underground ranges are just horrible.

Yes but you can normally shoot anything you want. I moved last year and had to join 3 clubs to get close to what I used to get at one range in an old railway tunnel.

Nice ^. Got our first guest day booked for May at Bisley. Taking 2 people who will get to have a go on scoped 308 under supervision, should be good.

They changed the rules, at our club you can't shoot if you turn up as a guest or probationary now without a police check, only air rifles, new law apparently brought in 2 weeks ago. Once the police check is back then they can shoot as a probationary.

Hopefully you can still shoot at Bisley.

Apparently they are allowed 12 "open days" a year where new people can shoot proper guns, but they must be registered in advance.
