The new A3/S3 saloon.

I see quite a few 1 series coupes around, so there must be a market for it.

Because there is a market for a coupé, means there is a market for a saloon?

I guess that's why JLR sell so many Evoques, because of the popularity of the TT.

It looks pretty nice

But this is a saloon, therefore customer expectation of a car with rear doors for row 2 occupant space is much different to the expectation of a Coupe and the style benefit that tends to go with the Coupe Daylight opening profile mean you out up with limited legroom. I guess audi amongst the competition has a bit of an advantage in that its FWD or AWD rather the BMW RWD package implications. This car is bleeding into the Uk market to broaden the range, it certainly won't have been designed specifically for the UK market for example. Clearly the product planners at the German 3 have a business case for doing it, that or generating brand apathy to get more people to walk into the larger cars later on.

To look at I quite like it, but an't help wondering how small it'll feel inside when an A4/3 series isn't exactly big inside.

Would have thought it'd have been better as a coupe a la the previous 1 series, but then if cars are getting 'bigger' with every generation maybe it's not that bad.

But again I actually like the look of it.

I quite like it and a 2.0 engine with 300 bhp must be a lot of fun. It see it as competition to the 135i coupe but with a couple of extra doors :D

TFSI explained

TFSI technology unlocks superior power, more dynamic performance and better economy from petrol engines.

For example, the turbocharged 2.0-litre TFSI engine in the Audi S3 Saloon generates a staggering 300PS of power, which is enough to blast from 0 to 62mph in just 4.9* seconds (manual 5.3 seconds) and up to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

You’ll notice enhanced driving enjoyment with spontaneous and dynamic torque build up. In turn, this encourages you to change up earlier so you don’t feel the need to rev the engine so much, promoting greater efficiency.

Who writes this stuff or is it just a dreadful translation?

Literally ****sticks.

When are these available? I'm slightly drunk and unable to load the page properly for some reason :/

It's marketing BS!

Keywords in there are superior, dynamic and staggering which make a really positive impression. The rest is waffle. ;)

Quieter at speed as the aerodynamics are better, less resonance as the boot is partitioned off and the bodyshells are generally a little stiffer.

Other benefits include when someone opens the boot in winter the cold doesn't blow straight through the car, plus the boot in a Saloon is generally of higher capacity than the equivalent hatch. Granted its a less versatile shape, but I still managed to get a 7' Christmas Tree in the boot of my Jetta with ease, and mine had fixed rear seats.

To be honest I've never really seen the point of a Hatchback. I'd get an Estate version if I needed the versatility.

While in Germany recently I had a few trips in the new Astra 4door and I was quite impressed. It looked a lot less ungainly than I had expected and the boot space was much bigger than the hatch.

It's expected to sell well on the continent, and in bucket loads in Russia.
