The new A3/S3 saloon.

Sedans in almost all markets are the 'premium' vehicle. Poorer people want sedans to make themselves feel rich, hence having cheap cars that are made as sedans i.e. Thalia, and now the premium brands are sedanising their smaller models for the same reason.
While in Germany recently I had a few trips in the new Astra 4door and I was quite impressed. It looked a lot less ungainly than I had expected and the boot space was much bigger than the hatch.

It's expected to sell well on the continent, and in bucket loads in Russia.[/QUOTE]Are Opel planning to make a profit on these?

Yeah, when I lived in South Africa there were saloon models of lots of cars that you'd never see in the UK; Astras, Corsas, Polos etc. Hatchbacks were still popular there though.

In China, Mexico, Brazil and other developing countries they've had all sorts of weird and wonderful models, like saloon Clios, Corsa estates. Some of them look really awkward.
