nearly saw something similar on Sunday when skiing. This kid wiped out and one of his skis was hurtling down a busy piste so I tucked it and got below the ski.It hit a bump and bounced up into the air nailing me above the knee, big bruise now.:(

The slope below was extremely busy (last run of the day on the main slope back to the resort) so I hope I hope my heroics saved some other kid getting decapitated!


A few years ago I was one of the first at a scene where a loose snowboard took off down a slop and hit someone in the head. 2 people were with the guy and told me to get help, i just saw blood gushing out and tucked it mach 10 to the patrol hut. There was a heli evac but I don't know the outcome.
Next day skiing by the same spot the pisting crew had spread out a fairly sizeable red patch :(

Luckily most places heavily enforce the rules for boards to be strapped now.
 
Re: skis and snowboards going loose, THE best part of our trip last season was when we were sat having lunch on the snow when some kid decided to the best way to get down a short, steep slope down to a chair lift was to go down on his bum. He let go of his board half way down and it absolutely flew down the mountain, but we could see it going for ages, coming up over each hill then disappearing before reappearing another 100m away. It was like a cartoon.
