What do you think about these guys, not really a gamers chip but they look a nice budget option for desktop use.

Cool, it seems a good choice, I think that and mainstream general desktop use will be the main work of these chips.

I'm not slagging it off, I just think that people buying chips in this sort of price range will want a long lasting computer and for the games coming out in the next few months a chip with only 1mb L2 cache may struggle a bit. I know that I haven't got the money to go buying cpus that won't last.

I'm not slagging it off,

Don't worry, I understand that, sorry if what I wrote suggested otherwise, I was just interested to hear if there was some factor about the chip that you knew about that I didn't.

Does the cache actually have that much of a bearing on gaming though. It does for encoding tasks, but from what I've seen benched gaming wise it looks like an awesome bang for buck chip...

lol don't worry it didn't, its just that many games benefit from the cpu having a larger cache and I think that a 1mb cache will not be enough for most of the big hitting games coming out in the next few months.

Darn just 2 weeks after I got an E4300!!

Is E21*0 simply E4*00 with half cache disabled, just like E6300/6400 is E6600/6700 with half cache disabled?

If it's the case I wouldn't expect retail version to overclock any better than E4*00s TBH. But we'll see.

The price is just awsome, funny though it's officially marketed as Pentium Dual Core rather than C2D according to that XS link.

I think Intel has got their head in the right place. Making chips that people will buy. Competing with their cheaper AMD competitors for the market.

Definitely not a gaming chip though. Even at 3Ghz it has a 1mb L2, cant OC the cache....

The reviews seem to have it performing well in gaming and the fact remains that it has a multiplier of 9x and for only £60 I mean thats a heck of an overhead in terms of overclocking ability!

It seems to suffer in the applications which arent necessarily gaming! I would say its certainly gonna be a great way to set up a very cheap core 2 duo system!

Look at 945 chipset based systems and I have one!
If indeed the multiplier is 9x and assuming I could get max out of the mobo like my current setup I would see the following:

e6300 @ 350fsb = 2.45Ghz
e2160 @ 350fsb = 3.15Ghz

Thats my max fsb and despite chache differences surely I would see a fairly massive performance increase without having to change my motherboard.
(Obviously if ideally it all worked out that way lol)

To be fair however I could buy Mobo for £60 but I have 2 copies of Windows MCE and Vista but both OEM so maybe I would encounter problems in the changeover

Must admit I'm actually tempted for the first time to consider upgrading my 3000+ Venice. At £55+VAT the E2160 could be the new Celeron 300A! Would need a cheapish motherboard too, of course...

Just a shame I shelled out £55 on another gig of DDR(1) only a couple of months back :(

Another link. And it does indeed seem that the cache has an impact on gaming (albeit these benches were done on a CPU dependant resolution, I'm not sure what a "real world" resolution would show).

http://www.pconline.com.cn/diy/cpu/reviews/0704/993288.html

The link is in Chinese unfortunately, however what they were basically trying to show was the direct gains from the cache while overclocked @ 3ghz. The 2160 is the 1mb, the 4300 is the 2mb and the 6850, I presume, is the 4mb.

The page numbers are in English down at the bottom or there is a drop down list. Pages 7 - 11 hold the gaming benches, they seem to test the same set of games as other benches though (but this one shows the cache comparison).

I expect it will overclock very well with less cache (and therefore heat). Bargin price/performance ratio :)

I'm going to get one...

Do you think OcUK will swap one for a graphics card RMA? I bought a dud 7600GT card for £58inc from here, can I get a straight swap?

Let us know how you get on :)

No idea, best to send them a webnote or give them a ring.

i read its a -5% hit, which is nothing if it clocks to 3.5.

Yer but thats -5% in current games, in the games coming out in the next few months it will be a larger performance drop.
