The 'next' iPhone - This Year?

Not to labour the MMS issue - but although I can see a use for it, the advent of camera phones etc - but the iPhone, from what I can see is just taking it to the next level..

It always surprised me that when the iPhone was released, one of the major issues raised by consumers was the lack of MMS capability...where one would imagine that people buying the hardware would be quite tech savvy and like the thought of 'email at their fingertips..'

Don't get me wrong the iPhone is an improvement over my old phone in nearly every way, but no MMS is a step backwards. My other examples aside, I wanted to send a picture while I was out to a mate in another bar. He can't get email attachments on his phone and its too late picking it up in his inbox the next day. The jokes well and truly over.

And I don't think I'm wishing for a feature that isn't there. It would require a decent change in the software but worthwhile in my opinion. No hardware changes required.

Unfortunately, since we haven't seen it so far, its increasingly unlikely we're going to see it. I dont think its anywhere near the top of Apple to-do list.

I see your point - it would probably be very easy to do from a software point of view - but as you say, I reckon apple have decided against it...

I'm sure there are 3rd party apps available??

Without knowing a great deal about the iphone, I can't really comment on its flaws.. or lack of features - but I'm guessing that will change when I pick one up..eventually!

Its a shame - but as I've never really utilised MMS a lot in the past, I can't see it bugging me..

We shall see though!

Slightly O/T - what are the 3rd party apps like?? /goes off to read sticky...

You simply have to look at the market the phone is aimed at - business users.

They use email not MMS, so it was never included.

My contract is up in December, hopefully some of the additions listed above will come to light before then so I can make the decision whether to switch, I'd be very impresses with a flash on the camera though tbh!

I currently have TyTN and not having a flash on that is a big downer, built in GPS so I can use tomtom is a bonus though!

I think you can contrast the lack of MMS on the iPhone to the "no floppy drive" approach given to the Macintosh when it was re-done.

Even then, people thought Apple were taking a big gamble (see: MacBook Air Optical Drive), but it paid off, and got computer companies across the world thinking.

In this case I can see your points theheyes, however, I would like simple bluetooth file sending on the iPhone.

The iPhone has only recently been targeted at business users. In fact, it wasn't even made available to business customers when it was first launched in the states. It's clearly a consumer device, which makes the lack of MMS frustrating to some users.

I'm more concerned that I can't bluetooth pictures to mates. It's so much less hassle than e-mail.

Definitely a bold move back then - but I think the current situation is just apple trying to read the market... I still havent seen the most recent sales figures - but the lack of mms doesnt appear to have had any great effect? Or has it?

I suppose they'd have to release MMS as a seperate update and look at the sales before and after to see that.

It didn't have any affect on my purchase HOWEVER, I was not aware of the bluetooth limitations before I bought.

To be honest, until you mentioned it before neither was I!

I'm assuming that such a software application could be developed quite easily? Is there not a third party app??

I suppose that is something that should be discussed in more detail - it would be interesting to understand apples reasoning behind it..

I know Justin mentioned the security - but you have to wonder how secure is any wireless device and whether the information contained on that device is the type of information that thieves would be after..

I think the answer to the latter is yes. As people begin to use their iphones to buy things, and log into online banking the information is there...

I do have faith in apples software and indeed hardware - but I'm not sure I'd like the idea of setting up a standing order on the bus...

I wouldn't be hard to make a simple "send image over bluetooth" app.

Perhaps I'll look in to it when I learn some more X Code :)

Have you seen how many support docs apple produce for it!?

I thought it'd take me about 10 minutes to download and print everything (in work of course!) and it took about 3 weeks!

Lots of good reading though....although I've never been bothered to start typing!

There's no way to do it without the OBEX Bluetooth profile. Might be possible to implement your own OBEX profile on a jailbroken iPhone but it would be a lot of work.

Bluetooth is no more insecure than e-mail or WiFi. There shouldn't be any security concerns, especially when the iPhone can't execute unsigned 3rd party applications.

Not true. The iPhone is specifically NOT a business product - there's no business tariff and you can't sign up for the contract through a company, it has to be personal.

I've had a thought to be honest, was reading about Palm & decided to look at its software (even though I don't own a Palm :p .)

I do like the idea of perhaps have a central program for the iPhone to work from.

What has sparked all this, my niece recently broke her Sony Ericsson w5--. I used its PC Suite which actually worked very well. Backup everything including txts etc. VERY useful if you ask me.

Same with this Palm software, you can do all your emailing/to do's/contacts/memo's etc all from this one program.

If you think how the iPhone interacts I don't think its the most easiest way? iTunes for Music/Video, iPhoto for Pictures, Adding contacts and/or appointments to iCal.

YES they are automatically picked up in iTunes etc, but all of these have to done on there own for iTunes to be able to pick them up and sync with the iPhone?

Do you think a dedicated program to do with file transfer, contacts/calender? Even to use the iPhone LIVE from your Mac? To txt etc?

Just an idea I guess.

What do you guys think?

:)
