The next Labour leader thread

Owen showed shrewd political judgement in running after Eagle. In doing so he let her take the worst of the venom from Corbyn supporters. It is a mistake, from the rebel's point of view, to encourage her to stand down. The ideal tactic would be for them to let Eagle run as the anti-Corbyn candidate and let Owen run as the sensible, unifying left-winger. Labour's IRV voting system means there is no harm to them in doing this.

Funny article on the Guardian basically claiming that Angela Eagle was made to stand down because she's gay and a woman. Apparently the fact that Labour has never had a female leader is a sign of ongoing misogyny, rather than a sign that no appealing women have stepped up to the plate at an appropriate time (ref: Liz Kendall - should have waited another term or two, gained more experience first).

Kinda sad really. Angela Eagle was completely wrong for the job, but someone always has to jump on the discrimination train. Thank **** she isn't Black too.

That's what I thought, and yet Corbyn got stick for not delivering the labour vote. It's the conservatives that failed to deliver their voters for remain.

it was won/lost by a small margin... if someone is going to make the argument that one leader succeeded/failed in convincing his/her supporters to vote for their side then it might be worth looking at the figures in advance of the referendum... were labour always at that percentage or did some of them change their minds either increasing or decreasing the percentage that voted for remain

Last minute nonsense was broadly even between the two camps.

Sorry,my bad, I was thinking back to the nights coverage where they kept pointing out labour seats (ie in terms of a general election)being consistent in voting leave.

That'd have included some of the former Labour voters who switched over to Ukip, too. Labour safe seats don't mean everyone's there loyal red even if their demographic profile matches up. Media pundits can be rather loose with their banter.

Meh, might as well not bother getting out of bed: after a single PMQs with May, Tories are now on 40% to Labour's 29%. Further being wiped out in Scotland-shire. :\

Labour's recent drop in the polls is quite obviously a result of the coup, and is totally understandable tbh. Hopefully we can make some progress again once all this is over, but at least our support is relatively consistent. Been sitting at ~30-35 ever since 2015. Tories are capitalising hard on the downfall of UKIP.
