The next UKIP leader thread

Most of the locals like him. In fact, they really like him. I think he'll keep his seat no matter he stands for.

He had a 12,000 majority in 2010, that was cut to 3,200 in 2015. He may have personal popularity but I don't think it will be enough. We shall see :)

He wasn't well liked by Farage, but I think he's pretty well liked otherwise. He is Welsh leader, isn't he?
I dunno, maybe I'm just assuming that others don't like him because I don't.

I genuinely think Carswell doesn't want it. I think he'll go Independent and probably lose his seat at the next election.

Yeah he doesn't want it, he basically said on question time that the only reason he didn't go back to the tories was that he felt he would have to go through another by-election for that to be fair, and he didn't want to put his constituents through that again so soon. Hes ineligible anyway, hasn't been in the party long enough.

Farage quit because of 'credible' death threats against him and his family. Utter scum that did this  People having a go at him for retiring might want to re-think their opinion of him. I was upset to hear of racist attacks against immigrants in the wake of the referendum result, but I'm not surprised to find that the violence isn't just one way. How did we let our society become so divided?

People buy newspapers and believe what they read in them.

 Are you suggesting The Times is making the above up? Partisan newspapers have been part of our culture for a long time and never really caused problems in that regard at least.

I doubt that article will make people re-think their opinions of the man, it doesn't change who he is or what he stood for, and he certainly won't be the first politician to receive threats like this.

However I'm not saying I condone that and hope the threats are just that and nothing more serious because as much as I despise the bloke, I wouldn't wish harm upon him.

When did the country become so divided?

Probably when he demonised a significant section of society and split the country in two using the referendum.

He doesn't deserve the death threats but it is unsurprising he is getting them after whipping up so much hate and while i believe he does not deserve them, i care little that he is getting them.

That's really horrible. I hope the police are able to act on this and arrest those responsible. No-one should be pushed from public life because of these kind of threats.

I'm not sure why you think it would change my opinion of him. He's still an odious knobwomble. Disgusting threats against him make no difference to that.

How did we let our society become so divided?

Farage, ably aided by some within the Tories, have spent the last two decades stoking up division for political ends.

Although I dont condone the death threats I suspect it wasnt just them as he freely admits, he has had death threats since the day he started UKIP.

In another article he gives a long list including marital issues, not seeing his children due to travel, his spinal injuries from his crash, and apparently he can't afford to be a MEP or MP

Friends say he is now considering a number of possible ventures as his decision to sacrifice his high-earning business career for politics had left him financially stretched.

So £300k a year and a £200k a year pension leave you financially stretched? Oh how the other half live..............

Anyone who has been a member of the BNP is not allowed to join UKIP.

How do they know who is a member, and how do they filter them out?

Is NF/EDL subject to the same rigour? How do they know? Why aren't they publically distancing themselves from their far right brethren if this is the case?

Man of the people though isn't he, he shares your pain! Maybe the high-end financial sector has been decimated by waves of them there low skilled immigrants stealing our jobs. The man really is an ass.

because without the far right element they would amass to nothing. Farage tries to play the game, but he knows without those mental EDL/BNP/NF/BF types he'd be nothing.

We could ask forums member deuse how he became a member of the BNP and then UKIP. First hand experience is probably better than conjecture.
