The Nokia E71 thread

Wow I really like it. Much better for viewing certain types of sites than Nokia browser.

Also auto-completes url's as you type them.

Had an error and one wierd thing during install though. First, it kept showing the About window several times before actual install. Then during install, it report that "component Symbian OS Pipe missing". It seems to work though.

This happen to you?

Cheers for the browser though. I like it.

To all owners of this phone, what is your opinion of the multimedia functionality of it?
I do realise it is aimed at the business user but what is the audio quality like for playing the odd bit of music on the train to work? Also what about video playback? I currently also own and Ipod so I don't expect it to be on the same level but if it's good enough so that I don't have to carry around two items, that would be a bonus.

Audio is fine, quite loud but has no equaliser. Video.... I came from an N95 and the E71 is poor compared to it. Files that ran fine on the N95 jump like crazy on the E71.

I used to be a fair bit of an audiophile. There are EQ presets which work as expected. Headset jack is not standard. Volume doesn't go very high (couldn't get my ears ringing). The ear buds are ok. If I were to use this for music, I'd be looking for an adapter to get by ear buds of choice. Especially for louder areas like public transport, the volume probably would be lacking though I haven't tried it in such circumstances.

It's ok. Might load some music on it and use it for that occasionally.

I haven't found the presets but I only stream internet radio on it. Do you require an MP3 to play to access the EQ?
I was playing a WMA that I'd grabbed from Nokia music store. So yeah I guess you have to be playing a file to get the EQ (or not something streaming). I haven't tried internet radio on it myself.

just got 1 of these on 3PAYG - called 3 and they unlocked for £15 so cant grumble about that.

My last phone was a nokia 6100 so it's a fair bit different :)

it can play youtube. And stream it. Not sure if it can play .flv though i havent tried yet. Posting from my e71 :D awesome. Glad i chose it over the n79

Yes, it'll play YouTube videos. Flash and H.264.

It'll also work with BBC iPlayer but you have to edit one of the files to get it to work. The BBC are currently trying to restrict usage as iPlayer is still technically in beta.

Cannot get Iplayer Beta 1.5 working. It loads fine, but displays nothing, only the menus at the top and bottom. Clicked search and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

I think this is relatively new info... Skype client beta is now officially compatible with E71. I've used skype to make skype-to-phone long distance calls from my computer, but haven't yet tried it via my E71. The "echo" test call worked and sounded great though. The app looks good generally as well.

The catch with the mobile client is that it doesn't use your data connection for voice calls. It routes your skype calls via a local call... so you end up with that cost (whatever it is for you) on top of your skype rate.

Ive found a nice theme called noble gray, its on deviantart created by a user calked gabb if anyone wants to make their phone look nicer. All the icons are replaced by vector icons etc. And it gets skinned properly :) i havent found many skins that do the whole phone yet

Is that the .com or the .org? The .org site is hyphenated: http://deviant-art.org/?s=noble

Both appear to have themes and such.

i'm not sure how to post links with the e71 ...
After doing fair amount of forum posting with the E71 on various sites, I'd say it's best to compose all posts/replies on the Notepad and copy/paste from there to the posting edit box in the browser. On some forum engines it easily happens that you lose your text when you move to the submit button.

If you do a lot of foruming on the phone then one idea is to place a Notepad shortcut next to the Browser shortcut on the Home screen. Then it's easy to switch back and forth.

BTW... an informative resource for owners of E71: http://www.e71blog.com/

I can't decide whether to get an E71 or an E66. For someone who has never used a QWERTY keyboard on a phone before, is it easy to get used to typing on the E71? Is it practical to type on the E71 using only one hand? Also, is typing on a QWERTY as quick as it can be on a regular T9 keypad?

I love the design of both of them. I want the larger capacity battery of the E71 but then I don't know if typing on it will annoy me, coming from regular keypads. Similarly, could I just make do with the poorer battery performance of the E66? Hmm.

Any comments would be appreciated, esp. E71 users who were new to QWERTY and also those who have used both E71 and E66! Thanks :)
