The **Now Drinking** Thread

Few more NAs from me.

IPA from yesterday. A weird one. Flavour was decent and the choice of hops is usually a go to for me but felt a bit too “west coast” ipa and bitter for me. I great NA choice if you like that style though.

Today’s post run beer. A hoppy lager and actually really good. Think lager lends itself to NA a bit better as they’ve less body/mouth feel anyway. Having the hops really helps this out.

Feeling optimistic about the rest after these. Whilst I still have a craving for a DIPA and might treat myself to a few for the WC final. For general consumption these don’t make me feel I’m missing out on the enjoyable beers.

Last night I also opened a red wine. Was always less confident of those. Opened this Naturel Zero Zero red wine. It’s a bit like previous ones. A bit too sweet and fruity for a wine I’d usually want. Not awful as a drink on its own. Just don’t convince yourself you’re drinking an actual Garnacha red wine.
However whilst browsing Reddit I saw a tip about adding a dash of bitters. Did that on the third glass and it helped a lot to remove the sweetness. Still not convincing myself it’s a Saturday night enjoy yourself red wine but again as an alternative to just drinking water all the time it’s not an awful choice.

(Note. Angostura bitters does contain some alcohol so not an option for people trying to be completely alcohol free)

A Thriller cocktail :D

Couple more NAs whilst watching the football. I did optimistically order 8 cans of real beer at around the 70th minute for the final :( Will be interesting to see if i can use my new found restraint to make them last and not drink them over the weekend (assuming they arrive in time) Got them from here which does some decent stuff in Spain https://gross.beer/#novedades

First up. Arpus a Latvian brewery. Of all of the beers i ordered this was the one i was most looking forward to. And from the pour it was exactly the kind of beer i'd pick. Cloudy, thick and with that pungent smell. Sadly the flavour lets it down. Unsure whether they've just over hopped it to try and mask the NA element, but feels like they just went a bit too far. Seems Untapped agrees with me with some fairly poor ratings. Gave it a 2.75/5. It was drinkable but not something i'll revisit

Second was this IPA from Frau Gruber called Lucky Liver. Same brewery as the hoppy lager i had on Sunday and this was just as good. If not better. Absolutely incredible and the only one so far where i've genuinely not felt something was missing for it being an NA beer. 4/5

Nearly a month for me too! Not by choice, diagnosed with Haemacromatosis so need to get my iron levels down of which boozing contributes, pretty odd feeling having been a fairly heavy drinker all my life. Tried quite a few NA's, the Lucky Saint IPA and Northern Monk Faith have been ok, but pretty much all NA beers taste like sweaty socks after 2. Been ending up just going for Heineken 0% and having them ice cold. Can't wait for a nice Pinot Grigio or a Margarita in a few months time! :(

@Martynt74 might give a few of these a try you've highlighted if they're available in the UK.

Not a fan of Guinness Zero?

It helps that it’s always hot here so an ice cold NA beer is still reasonable. Even the generic ones.

Honestly those Frau Gruber ones were very good though. Shame they only do 2.

The disappointing thing is that I’d convinced myself that the NA ones were enjoyable and I wasn’t missing out but having this NEIPA has blown them all away :(

Not a fan of Guinness Zero?
Guinness Zero isn’t good for someone who is overloaded with Iron due to haemacromatosis… :D I have over 5 times the max amount of iron in my blood than normal, have to have a pint of blood taken every 2 weeks for approx 12 months to get levels down to normal….

Just to add a clarification. That Gross beer isn't NA. It's a 7% NEIPA which was why it was a great celebratory choice. What better way to celebrate sobriety by going to opposite way :D

I tried Thatchers 0% Cider this week, one mouthful and all 4 tins went down the drain!....

I've got a lovely bottle of Tarquins Sea Dog Navy Gin in the cupboard which i'm dying to have a try of! (Tarquin Leadbetter is my sister in laws cousin!)
