The **Now Eating** Thread

This is what irritates me these days. They want us to eat healthy yet fruit and veg prices are ridiculous.

Either way it was well worth it, I used half of the strawberries and half of the raspberries so it lasts for 2 days. I pad it out with bananas which are the cheapest of the lot.

I came to that conclusion when I got my juicer 2 years ago. Fruit are expensive if you want enough in a glass to make it worthwhile.

These days I would pick 1 type of fruit, like 4 to 5 strawberries, or just 1 banana. Then two thirds of a glass full of crushed ice, one third full of semi skimmed milk and you handful of oats if you want. Add some sweeteners to taste, or perhaps add 1 dessert spoon of peanut butter.

It'll be cheaper as you can stretch a packet of strawberries to about 4 to 5 drinks, the overall cost of a pint of the "smoothie" works out much cheaper, perhaps to around 50p, as opposed to like £5.

Probably healthier with less calories and sugar (fructose) content as well.

I'll start cutting down from the next one then, thanks for the heads up.

I'm thinking of just putting another banana in and mixing the yoghurt with a little bit of milk, then maybe adding some honey to sweeten. I've got to say though I much prefer this to having a sandwich/cereal in the morning. It's really refreshing and I don't feel as bloated as i'm not really a breakfast type of guy.

I haven't used my smoothie maker because I can't afford the fruit. Used a lot of frozen fruit too but it's still expensive.

4 pack of chocolate bar = £1
punnet of strawberries/berries etc = £2+

We'll never be a healthy nation unless we can afford it

Try the crushed ice trick next time, honestly, it will still be a smoothie and SO DAMN COLD ! :D which is a bonus.

The 200ml or so of milk is enough to make it milky, and you will still be able to taste the fruit, the sweeteners is just for tastes really, add honey if you want but that to me is just more sugar (which I am trying to cut down on by using sweeteners).

Banana and peanut butter smoothie this way tastes great.

Or Banana and Nuttella ?

If you work it out, with the milk, a whole banana, some peanut butter and oats, it's enough calories there for breakfast or even as a meal (if you add more peanut butter or oats), so the extra fruit/berries isn't really needed, which ultimately is where the expense is.

p.s. I have found Blueberries don't work that well…it reacts weirdly with milk and curdle.

I use frozen fruit in smoothies, something like this: http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=259443614
Chuck some of that in, it chills the smoothie down nicely and is much cheaper than fresh.

The texture is off if you thaw out the fruits, but for smoothies that doesn't matter and they have just the same nutrition as fresh fruit.
