The **Now Eating** Thread

Talk about a blast from the past. My first trip to Scran since they moved locations at the end of last year. Went with a new menu item, the Crispy Pork Brunch Bun, consisting of crispy Italian pork belly, folded basil egg, marmite mascarpone, soused fennel, Parmesan crumble and rocket. Soooo goood :)

After a few drinks at All Bar One I went to Panang for lunch. Went with the Tom Yum soup, sunshine beef and a special fried rice. Turns out I wasn't as hungry as I thought I was. I got through the soup fine, but not long after starting on the other two plates my appetite completely vanished. I ended up leaving at least half of the other two plates uneaten. What I did eat was delicious though.

I have never actually tried quorn but this looks nice.

Does it taste as good as using minced beef however? Maybe need a stock cube or summit to add flavour?

If your a huge meat eater than I’d say it’s no alternatively unfortunately.

I’d say it more bulks up the dish and adds texture rather than mimics the meat flavour!

Some brands are better than others, I find Quorn Branded Frozen Mince is great to be chucked in something sauce based.

Partner is a Pescatarian (Not a Vegetarian I was once kindly corrected in this thread :p) So I eat a fair bit of Meat Alternatives… Id say mince substitutes are the least realistic compared to Burgers, Chicken etc.

Seeing the mention of Chilli & Rice on page 807 reminded me that I haven't made one in a very long time.

So this is roughly how I make mine, but will change to suit what is in the fridge/freezer or larder

1.5kg Beef mince
1 Bar extra dark chocolate
1 Bottle Guinness. Export being better
2 Packs chilli's + frozen chilli's
Generous amount of Ginger
Tablespoon Szechuan pepper & 2 tablespoons peppercorns
Soy
Worchester sauce
Packet of Chilli con carne mix
2 Onions
Cubed potatoes
Tin tomatoes
Whole head of garlic
Sea salt
Brown rice
Nigella seeds for rice
Little chilli oil
Cheddar
Red Kidney beans
Baked beans
Borlotti beans
Cannellini beans
Buter beans
Haricot beans

Browned off in a large pan and then added to an Instant Pot Duo and slow cooked for 16 hours.

Not in anyway trying to be a chilli con carne, but being something I enjoy and brought on a good sweat when eating this this morning

@aVdub - excellent looking chilli! May I humbly suggest either swapping the baked beans or the haricot beans for black eye beans? Don’t see why you’d have both given they’re the same bean underneath the sauce!
