**THE NVIDIA DRIVERS THREAD**

Tad confused here. I read somewhere the other day we would need a new 595.99 driver and latest NV app or updated NVPI to use this - got the others but there's no 595.99 anywhere. Which drivers work with this new MFG? I'm still on 581.80 as I had some problems with 595.97 and NV app says "update your drivers to the latest version".

Do we HAVE to use 595.97 then? Really don't want to do that as they cause BSOD when using Open Composite in VR!

Well I'm annoyed :(

I loaded up Battlefield 6 and it did shaders like a new nvidia driver was installed, yet the one I installed over a week ago was the 581.89! Checking MSI Afterburner and it showed 591.86 which is a completely different driver, a driver installed by Windows Update.

So I checked Windows Update and sure enough Successfully installed on ‎31/‎03/‎2026.

Because of that Windows Update issue whereby some systems were affected by BSOD's and performance issues ( it was recalled ) I had turned everything is OFF, including services (disabled) to stop these updates coming over.

I have NEVER allowed Windows to install it's own crappy drivers

So yeh, it's forced installed and turned services back on. I thought this **** wasn't going to happen anymore
I just checked my driver's and mine has done the same. Was on 576.88 for resident evil requiem and windows has installed 591.86 yesterday

Wow - I wondered why I had some graphics glitches last couple of days on my gaming system which I intentionally kept on 591.74, just checked and Windows Update has installed 591.86 on the 30th... **** sake I'll have to enable WUB to prevent this stupidity. Seems they are forcing the driver through as a mandatory install for some reason... WTF. (And it has caused an incompatibility issue with nVidia App which can only be solved by manually completely redoing the driver and app updates).

(Only Windows Update Blocker will prevent this behaviour - disabling the update services, policies and most of the other update blocking scripts do not comprehensively block updates).

Windows can force a driver update for security or compatibility reasons and override most Windows exclude drivers settings / basic policies.

The only reliable way to block an unwanted driver install is by DEVICE-ID using policy 'Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs' under 'Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Device Installation Restrictions

A few notes:

Apply the policy after installing preferred driver.

If a different driver needs to be installed - disable the policy, install the driver then reenable the policy.

If a Home version of Windows is being used see footer of this comment 'Windows Home'

See general guidance at https://superuser.com/a/968749 OR https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../manage-device-installation-with-group-policy

Windows Home

Enable Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) in Windows 10 & 11 Home Edition - https://www.majorgeeks.com/content/page/enable_group_policy_editor_in_windows_10_home_edition.html

OR

Policy Plus for all Windows Versions at https://github.com/Fleex255/PolicyPlus or alternative download from https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/policy_plus.html

OR

Using registry, see https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials...s-update-updating-specific-device-driver.html

or

In registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

In Windows key, create a new Registry key, and set its name to WindowsUpdate.

Under that WindowsUpdate key, create a DWORD value.

To create it, right-click on the empty area, access the New menu, and use the DWORD (32-bit) Value option. After creating it, rename this value to ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate. Set to 1

Restart, done.

Love it when ppl rather let windows randomly install that’s always so outdated and then next update install another one over the already outdated one rather than just changing one thing. And no it will not ”brick” anything, lol

I haven't done this, but if it happens again I might try it out

I am having nothing but issues since upgrading from a 3090 to a 5090, constant freezes playing HDR video and totally unable to load a couple of Unreal Engine 4 games without a crash. Any suggestions as to a driver that actually has some stability?

Thank you for the reply, was digging through trying to solve an error with one of my all time favourite games. Was constantly getting "Unreal Engine 4 Fatal Error" assumed it was a graphics problem, but turned out to be the sample rate of my DAC, an obscure post suggested an audio issue. Newest NVIDIA drivers now seem stable with DAC at 32bit 192, who would've thunk it?

I'm on 595.97 and can play HDR videos on YouTube, Kodi and don't have issues with UE4 games. FF Intergrade, Rebirth, Kena bridge of Spirits, BL3 all play fine.

What driver are you on now and what games are crashing?

What type of crashes are you getting? Nvlddmkm in event viewer and crash to desktop?

I made the same jump. I've gone back to 581.80 that seem to work fine in everything for me, including VR. I've had issues with the 595 driver series.

EDIT - actually tell a lie. Just been trying Crimson Desert again and the 581.80 drivers slightly hobble frame gen - GPU maxes out at 88% usage when frame gen is on. Is full usage with newer drivers. Had similar issue about 6 months ago with other drivers/ games and frame gen. For ***** sake, Nvidia have really dropped the ball with their drivers for the 50 series....

Even 2x feels awful for me as my max base is only 58fps on my display.

Artifacting is visible in most games too.

I’m really not a fan of where Nvidias focus is.
This has been my experience. It works really well in Cyberpunk, even though I only get around 90-100fps with all the bells and whistles (so a base FPS of around 40-50), but in most other titles I've tried I can't help but notice artifacting when turning using the mouse, and this is in normal gameplay, not manically waggling the mouse actively trying to find fault. That was noticeable in GoW: Ragnarok and Indiana Jones.

I don't really notice artifacts in Darktide with it on, but it feels too laggy to play with, even from a base of around 70-80 FPS.

DLSS4 and 4.5 are great, FG has too many trade offs on the whole.

Use frame gen with my 4070 in bf6 playing online and dont notice any sort of artifacts or input lag, get a base of around 120ish fps without it but get over 200fps with it.

Do i have to use it....no....but it seems smoother with it on and dosnt really hinder me in any way at all.

I tend to keep my main monitor at 120Hz, it has a 4k resolution. Before any forms of upscaling I would hardly ever get to that FPS, never mind the 144Hz it supports.
However, trying out MFG with my 5070Ti and, for example, Cyberpunk, I have been pleasantly surprised. If I keep the 120Hz refresh rate and set the upscaling to Dynamic, preset B, the latency is acceptable and I have not noticed any artificing. Then again, I am not that good at pixel peeping to look for issues.
I would set a target refresh rate to around 100, so if it overshoots then I find myself within the set rate for the monitor, generally.
IIRC I note around 1x to 4x in the MFG, with all the settings of the game at their highest and DLSS set to quality.
Occasional testing with other games, varies on what they support, has been largely positive. Even more so when I figure out how things are working, lol.

With that last driver update that fixed performance of PT in games, I have noticed a new bug with it whereby exiting a fullscreen video whether youtube or iplayer web etc you get the other browser window (assuming you have multiple browser windows on a large display) will be grey. until you click on it to focus the window and then it comes back to normal.

No performance or issues etc, just the grey window until you tap to focus after exiting fullscreen playback.

Not sure if this was ever a driver related issue or just a Windows one, but I recall there was a Windows 11 update that caused a performance drop on Nvidia cards, did that ever get sorted out (either via drivers or Windows Update)?
