The OcUK distributed computing team needs YOU!

I don't get the whole pirates thing either. Can someone explain?

it's a team competition, and there's another team called the pirate something which is trying to get above ocuk in the ranking table.

Have grabbed the installer, will sort it later as i'm off to bed now.

Wonder if they all use Avast! as their AV? - sorry :p

For anyone who is confused, this is about using your PC for scientific research. For each bit of research your PC does (by doing calculations in the background) you get points. People doing this research join teams, OcUK has a team. So as well as getting points for yourself the team gets points too.

Currently another team called The Pirate Fleet are close to passing us on the points table. In the past they have passed us and there has been some good humoured rivalry going back and forth between our forum and theirs. Last time we ended up winning the battle but they are back for more and they are out-scoring us. We are starting to get towards the points per day total that we need to stay ahead of them.

The software to run the research calculations is called BOINC

Within the BOINC software you can do many different kinds of science projects. The one we are focusing on at the moment is called Rosetta@Home which studies proteins in the human body. You can read about it here.

Wow, I haven't used BOINC since it was in Beta for SETI@Home, when it was destined to replace the command line cruncher. Installation is a breeze now compared to those days!

Joined up for Rosetta (ID: SourChipmunk). Added my Duo-core from work, will add my triple-core at home later. Had a little problem with it last night as BOINC wanted to install the 64-bit version which I'm told has some problems. Will read over the FAQ later and see what needs to be done.

Edit: this reminds me of how I found OcUK many years ago. In the early SETI@Home days OcUK was in first place and I wondered who they were. Been here ever since.
