no mate i can't lay any claim to fame like that.
<and to be honest that name means nothing to me as i don't take an active interest in who's who.i couldn't name any of the UFC fighters, the last one i saw was UFC4 or 5....only the Gracie name rings a bell with me>
i've met Sam Kwok once and was supposed to get a little Chi Sau in with him but couldn't due to injury.
i train (nowhere near as regular as i should) because i enjoy it.it's improved my combat ability quite a bit,but i was fairly handy before i started WC anyway.
i've boxed and also sampled a few other fighting styles but i've always gravitated back to WC.

He not a UFC fighter, just a very well known(maybe not :)) Wing Chun Master, i thought u might have trained with him.

Thats what I thought, cheers. I think the guy you may be thinking of is David "The Crow" Loiseau, although Im not 100%, as I much prefer Pride to the UFC :)

Interestingly, Mirko "cro cop" Filipovic was a pure kick boxer when he first fought in pride, and he domintaed most of his opponents with ease. I don't really think that means that kickboxing is a superior style to others though, more that he is just a superior athlete with awesome genetic gifts.

I've seen Cro Cop fight and he is simply unbelievable, he kicks like a mule. However, most of his opponents were not heavy grapplers like you find in UFC, Pride tends to have more stand-up.

I dunno, He has beaten Mark Coleman (wrestler, former UFC champ), Josh Barnett x 2 (wrestler, former UFC champ), Kevin Randleman (wrestler, former UFC champ) Alexander Emelianenko (sports sambo european champ), Kazuyuki Fujita, and Ron Waterman.

All of these guys are huge grapplers, and he took them all. He actually outmuscled most of them, suprising seeing as they nearly all out weighed him by quite a margin.

Hey darkside (or anyone else), do you know if there are any pure wc users in the ufc / pride / K1?
hello mate,long time no argue.....err debate ;)
happy xmas @ you+your family etc.

right,onto your point.
it wouldn't work but to understand why you need to scratch below the surface.
Wing Chun is a self defence martial arts system.that's its raison d'etre.
there are no attacking moves as such in Wing Chun, one of it's underlying principles is,as you're defending yourself, you let your attacker commit and you use his power and ergonomics against him.
this works well in reality but less than well in a competition format where statistically in bouts that are fairly evenly matched the eventual winner is more often than not the fighter that landed the first blow.
going back to Richdog's post i too wouldn't buy into all this too deadly stuff,it is of course hogwash..but there is an element of fact in there.
last time you (Depth) and i debated this i pointed out there are certain techniques that you just wouldn't use in a competition.....no matter how hardcore they are they are still tournaments.it goes against the grain and the discipline of a proficient WC student who has been training for many years to throw something like a finger strike to the eyes of an opponent merely to win a competition.note i'm not saying "oh it's not fair and this is why they don't do so well",i'm saying a fighter should have all his available weapons at hand and a WC practitioner would be very unlikely to use techniques like this that could cause something like permanent blindness.

many of the more successful tourny styles feature ground fighting heavily in their syllabus as they work VERY well.however in reality there's not much comfort in that thought if i'm on the floor of a car park tying Richdogs limbs in knots as one of his buddies wades in and reshapes my cranium with one of his size tens.

the point is what works best in a real situation isn't necessarily what wins tournaments....a sentiment shared with a certain Mr.Lee

sorry again matey but i just take part for myself, the outside martial arts world is for the most part unknown to me as i don't have the time or the interest to do the whole top trumps thing with the facts and figures about people in various styles.
although i like Geoff Thompson, never met the guy but i'd like to.
i like his attitude.

there is a saying,if you want to fight like a Thai, you have to TRAIN like a Thai.

those guys (and girls) train like madmen....and then some.

None of those fighters are sub grapplers. Coleman, randleman, fujita and waterman are wrestlers, i.e Get take down, lay and pray. Unfortunately for them CroCop's success is mostly down to the fact he has an awesome sprawl and can keep the fight standing.

Good luck to rs125 with the training camp. Have been to Chiang Mai on holiday and saw a few fights there at the local stadium, it's a great place and you can live really well there on very little money.Apparently westerners are popular at the camps, and are keenly sought out for bouts with the local fighters so be prepared ....

After following the link I'm considering a couple of weeks there myself :)

lol i'm not the biggest teabag in thew world but the thought of training at a Thai camp makes my knees wobble. My mate does Muay Thai and his instructor is an ex world champ called Mick, a big black bloke, and he's told him about how they train over there and how they fight. lets just say the shelf-life of a fighter is quite erm... short over there. The chance of big and frequent injury is huge... definately not my cup of tea. :o

I'll stick to large bruises and a bloody nose thanks, don't quite fancy cracked shins etc at this point in my life. :D

muay thai was the dominant art in UFC i though as it makes you as tough as nails and able to dish out punishment. Most of the other martial arts may be "better" and more complete however if youve never been hit before then you arnt prepared for it and will lose.

And i wouldnt want to go into a ring with anyone from the UFC without knowing i can take a load of pain as thats what your gonna get.

After reading through this thread i`m gonna give kickboxing a try next year. i`m pretty sure the teaching is muay tai based aswell. Think the instructor trains is from the KO gym or something in london.

Should be good :D

Well, Fedor is a submission machine, and he was unable to sub Mirko....in fact, he never had him in trouble on the ground at all. And Fedor in the no.1 fighter in the world.

Hi all, just noticed this thread.....
Ive been training in Tae Kwon-Do for just about 11 years, and i reached my 3rd Dan about 8 months ago.
It has a huge effect on my way of life, the way i compose myself etc...
I help teach at my local club, and i hope to go on to own a club for myself within the next 10 years.
Great to see so many other artists out there!

Hey all, I'm going to be starting Judo up again in january after being out for a year and a half. What throws and hold downs would you recommend to read up on? The club i'm going to is Brighton Judo Club who are with the BJA.

Trojan are you sure that you can't do chokes/arm locks? I'm pretty sure when I was at sussex comp's there were people doing chokes there (well the seniors, at the time I was a mon).
