The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

I vaguely recall not being much of a fan of Macallan when i had it, although it was quite a few years ago now and my tastes have since changed

It's a great starter whisky though, which is what I gathered the question asker wanted really. Something quite inoffensive, and easy drinking but still nice enough to be a bit special.

Its a while since i had Glenlivet but Oban is a fantastic speyside malt for not too high money :)

Is this some weird predictive text thing as Oban is nowhere near Speyside? As for Glen Livet it's a bit bland for my taster but the 18 year old is very easy to drink if a bit sweet. The 12 is similar but a little harsher.

I reckon some people just think that there are the easy drinking Speyside style malts and the harsher, smokey, and peaty, Islay style malts and forget about the rest. Oban would be somewhere in the middle, based on my limited tastings of it but probably leans slightly more to the Speyside side. Why he'd recommend an Oban as another choice to being similar to a Glenlivet seems odd though.

Heading over a friends tonight for our annual tasting, he's sent me a quick preview of what's on offer

Will try and kept post updated tonight but it may be tomorrow (after the inevitable hangover)

dont know how you guys can actually hold whisky in your mouth log enough to extract all the different qualitys! whenever i have whisky it goes down as fast as possible with a mouth full of larger to get rid of the taste

So treated myself to a Jura 10 yr old this evening doing the Xmas food shop, boy they weren't kidding when they said tones of honey!

Gutted I didn't splash out the extra quid for superstition.

The superstition has a pretty overpowering peaty sweetness. The 10 year old might be an easier and more enjoyable drink. I'm coming around to superstition, it's definitely a grower though.

I'm looking for a nice Bourbon to drink over Christmas, having received a bottle of Glenmorangie to cover the single malt Scotch side of things. Does anyone have any opinions on: Maker's Mark, Four Roses, Corner Creek or L & G Woodford Reserve? I've tried Jim Beam, Bulleit and Buffalo Trace before and really liked the latter two, so something along those lines would be pretty nice. :)

If your first thought is "get rid of the taste" then you've never tried a "decent" whisky ;)

Trust me you're not missing much dude - superstition is very peaty for a Speyside malt. Far too much so for my taste.

just been given a dalwhinnie 15 year single malt

so far, very nice :)

Nice one - enjoy :)

I've recently added a bottle of Mackmyra to my collection, they are Whisky mad in Sweden and before i left last month I picked up a bottle of the Mackmyra Den första utgåvan (first edition) and it's pretty damn good. Definitely a very unique whisky.

Just opened a bottle of Talisker 10 yr old. Quite nice, peaty. Not sure what to buy next. Would like a collection. But I keep opening them then they need drinking.

Also, when you open a Malt, does it need drinking. Or is it fine to stick the top back on and leave.
