The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Picked up some more stuff for Christmas today. An Cnoc 12 and a couple of glasses for faither and me, good spirit company own blend out of curiosity, and some raspberry gin for maw. Almost sorted for Christmas now, need a final trip to Morrisons to spend some vouchers and I'm done and dusted!

Oh, let me know what their blend is like. I was in today buying beer, vodka and cigars.

I'm just going to be drinking Balvenie Signature & Talisker Distillers Edition on Christmas Day.

can I join in? :D

I know the Courvoisier isn't whisky but i like to alternate between whisky and that so it's in the photo :p

Just picked up the Balvenie signature tonight, on sale at tesco for £28, just about to tuck into my first sampling of it :)

Only Whiskey I've liked is Dalmore 15 year old when I sampled it at the airport, it was very pleasant. But I'm a wimp, whiskey/spirits burns my throat a bit too much and most kind of taste like my aftershave. I'm hoping I acquire a taste for it with age.

Glenrothes Select Reserve last night for what I think was the first time. It was pretty awful; so sweet. It tasted almost syrupy in texture with vanilla and caramel flavours dominating. Not my cup of tea.

Dalmore is a top whiskey. I've tried 12 and 18. 18 has a sherry note. It is the smoothest whisky I have ever had.

I like the bottle, I like hip flasks, I like the colour of whiskey in a glass, I like the smell. I just can't drink it. :( Would love to be able to enjoy it like you guys.

Nice to see that this thread has had a real and proper revival :)
Just reading through the last few pages I'm surprised Auchentoshan hasn't been mentioned. A Really nice, mellow whisky.

Have a Belevenie doublewood waiting ti be opened on recommendation of this thread. Last bottle to be finished was a snow grouse which I bought on its novelty alone... Sadly a novelty is all it was.

The Talisker Distillers Edition is a stupidly good whisky, polished off a lot of that last night. Really not impressed with Balvenie Signature though, will be sticking to the Doublewood.

Got some of the JD honey for Xmas. I'm actually quite a fan, and it certainly teaches you how to drink whisky. Which is hard to explain, but the combination of stupidly sweet from honey, and the traditional whisky kick works well together to limit you from taking massive swigs. It is good for a more refined, sensible pace drinking. That said it is slightly weaker (37.5%)

Overall though, very much enjoying it. Would recommend it to anyone who likes sweet xD

Must admit I'm really not a fan of sweet whisky - I'd guess yours tastes something like this?

Is the doublewood better? so far im preferring the Glen Moray

Nothing wrong with that - I love the Glen Moray myself and every time I visit my brother in law who lives in Elgin (Near the distillery) we usually have a "small sample" of it. :p

Just because it's one of the cheaper malt whiskies doesn't necessarily mean it's not going to taste nice. :)

Potentially, yes. Having not tried the stag, I can't say, but the one you linked, whilst being a liqueur is quite a bit lower proof, so suspect it'll be slightly less potent...

I've never tried the JD Honey myself but the Stags Breath was the only thing I could relate it to - I found it far too sweet and sickly but as you say it's a liqueur and not a genuine malt so it will be lower in proof. That's the good thing I've found about whisky though - there's such a varied choice.

I've also think (from my experience anyway) people who say "I don't like whisky" probably just means that they tried a couple of cheap blended rubbish and come to that conclusion.

I'd always though this and one of the people at work didn't like it but was interested and willing to try good stuff as he'd only ever had crap. He thought 18 year old Glenlivet and Highland park was ok, much better than he'd had before but still wouldn't drink it out of choice. He didn't at all like a 18 year old Laphroig or a 17 year old Ardbeg.

If anyone is near a Booths they seem to have a few good offers on until the 31st. I might have to pop in and pick up a Quarter cask and 12 year old Highland park or 2.
