The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Coincidentally I tried the Uigeadail for the first time last night. I didn't really find it to be any better than the 10. I know sometimes in the pub I might not appreciate a whisky as much as I do at home, but I was still surprised to be left feeling slightly underwhelmed. Enjoyable but I expected more.

It used to be a lot better than the 10 (or the 10 wasn't as good as it is now for a couple of years), now its selling point to me is it needs water so it requires slight effort to drink where as I prefer the 10 neat. If you'd tried it how did you find the corryvreckan? I liked it and it certainly didn't show it's strength but I doubt I'll buy another bottle.

I think I've gone off my Laphroiag Quarter Cask :( Had a drink of 12yr when I was out the other day and found it much nicer to drink (for me), than the QC. Can't see myself finishing the bottle (only had 5-6 drinks from it, so still very much full), wat do?

Just keep it, i'm sure just as you've gone off it a little in time your tastes will change and you'll enjoy it again.

Otherwise, i'm not too far away! :D

Will give it another chance (or six :p) over this week, see if I get used to it again. It's probably because I'm getting too used to supping Dad's whiskeys (Abun'adah, Glen Gairoch 12yr, Doublewood). He absolutely detests the Laph :D

I would gladly take it off your hands, for a small fee of course.

Was going to purchase a bottle anyway...

I had a nip of Abun'adah the other night at my friends and found it a bit ferocious..I needed a drop of water

it mentions this on the bottle as well once I had a read of it!

it only needed a tiny amount but made it much more palatable

Laphroiag is not the smoothest whisky. Is it that what put you off or the strong smoke?

Just enjoying a Laphroig, i tried it with a drop of water but for me it seems to blunt, makes it less enjoyable and sort of stunts the peat, am i adding too much as id does suggest a drop?.

It all depends on the individual and how they enjoy their whisky. I'm drinking Quarter Cask at the moment and I always drink it neat as I feel it is a well rounded whisky as it comes. If I'm drinking the standard 10yo, I tend to have a wee splash of water in it (about a teaspoon in a double - roughly 10%) as I feel it can be a little harsh without. Other people like it neat - it's all a matter of preference. There's no right and wrong, work out what you prefer and drink it as you like it.

Just a heads up:

This is now selling on special offer at £28.61 in Sainbury's - it's usually £36.00+ :D

I had a bad day at work so popped into the whisky shop in Skipton. I came out with a 16 year old Glenlivet Nadurra, a Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10 year old (not the PC10) and a 10 year old Ardbeg. I've just sampled the Glenlivet neat and it's very nice, a much richer flavour than the 12 and probably better than the 18. The Port Charlotte 10 smells good and the initial taste is very peaty. It goes very quickly though and seems almost a bit weak. The PC8 I've had in the past was a lot better though that was cask strength.

Figured this might be the best place to ask this....

My mrs has a habit of entering online competitions and the likes, told me she'd won something from Jack Daniels....A delivery driver just called to say he has a PALLET for me, to my surprise I'm now the owner of what appears to be a 53 gallon JD oak barrel!!

As much as I'd love to keep it, I just don't have room (I don' think!).

So my question, anyone know of decent dedicated whiskey forums/resellers I may be able to palm it off too? I will try some of the many whiskey shops in town tomorrow too.

Can I have it? I'll collect it.

If you want to sell it try whiskywhiskywhisky.com. The Glasgow Whisky Festival organisers post on there, along with a few shops and lots of whisky lovers. Should get a bite.

I'll have a hunt around as I really need to figure what its actually worth too!

I'll have a post in whiskywhiskywhisky too - thanks for the link :)

If you're right about it being 53 gallons then that's about 240 litres. I don't buy JD but i'm guessing it's got to be at least £20 a litre so it's worth roughly £4.5k

Edit: it's empty isn't it?

Oh....its not full btw :p

I wish it was, but its not, the paper work says it was taken from some display in covent garden?

You're about spot on for price of a full one though, price estimates on empty ones change quite a bit depending where you look.
