The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

finished my Jim Beam bottle which i must have had for about 5 years , bought a bottle of famous grouse as it was on offer at morrisons for £13 for a litre.
anyone tried this:

Not to pricey. Normally a rum / glayva drinker so whiskey lasts me years!

Aberlour 10 is a pretty standard run of the mill supermarket Speyside. It's pretty much always on offer, though £16 is a particularly great price. There are better whiskies out there when it's full up at £25 but bargain at £16.

Had JD honey for the first time the other night when out, was very nice! Think i'm going to geta bottle of the jim beam honey as i prefer normal jim beam over JD. only £15 a bottle :)

this arrived this week for me, have really like Kilchoman, they had just opened when i spended my first week on islay and have been following them every since

Well, dad likes his Carribean Cask! Nice to drink too, can really get a nose of toffee and vanilla, on the tongue it mainly seems to be fruity. Rum taste is definitely there.

Dad also got a bottle of Penderyn Madeira Finish from my brother-in-law, and all I can say is: WOW. Even sweeter than the Balvenie, but with a fabulously complex fruity taste.

Picked up a bottle of ten year Jura from waitrose for twenty pounds, which for the money is very reasonable. Smooth, slightly viscous, hint of sea salt and caramel. Aroma is almost non existent, but taste is very pleasant.

ok whisky heads, spec me a new bottle of whisky. Nearly finished my Balvenie 12 triple cask, 14 carribbean and Glenmorangie 10, what else should I be looking at along those lines?

I think Benriach are putting out some excellent expressions, but not available in most supermarkets

Blair Athol if you want something with a bit more oomph then the glemorangie 10 whilst keeping a few of its characteristics

and I do keep harping on about it....but the glen garioch 12 year old is as good a drop you can get for under 40 quid

and for an often overlooked whisky check out Royal Lochnagar. Easy drinking and very pleasant.

That's an incredible price! Is that a normal 700ml bottle? I'm gonna pop into my local Sainsburys and see if they have it too.

@FTM yeah, I've tried the Benriachs, amazing stuff. The 12yo tastes like molasses and bananas, but the 15yo tastes like rum, chocolate and raisins! One of the most original whiskeys I've ever had!

Go for the Oban 14. It's a really good dram. It's going to be a bit smokier than what you've had before but it's still nice and fruity.

Can someone please spec me a supermarket-available bottle of Whisky up to say £30 that would make an acceptable gift for a Whisky fan?

I have zero knowledge on the stuff :p

Got 3 new whiskies today so I now have the onerous task of sampling them all :p

First up, Dailuaine Managers' choice, single cask selection.

K79rN1e.jpg

I'm a big fan of the standard 16yo Dailuaine so I'm keen to try this. Bottled at 12yo so a fair bit younger but hand picked so I'm optimistic.

Nose:
Straight away, vanilla oak and then a hint of sweetness - maybe honey. Hint of leather too.

Palate:
Warm and spicy, followed by sweetness and a slight chocolatey note. Maybe just a faint hint of orange peel.
Adding a touch of water intensifies and dries the spiciness and dilutes the sweetness, changing the taste profile to something a bit hotter but more rounded.

Finish:
Long and sweet with a little spice.

Overall, I'm very pleased. It's a good whisky and I like the way the taste profile changes on adding water. At 58.6% ABV, you would expect it to be a bit overpowering neat but it isn't. Also, the high ABV means it can take water quite well so you can have a bit of a play seeing how it changes with different amounts of water.

This was reduced from £200 to £120 on Whisky Exchange. Not sure if I'd pay £200 for it but I'm not disappointed at £120.

Next up, An Cnoc Peter Arkle Limited Edition No2.

D2vz6Lk.jpg

Haven't had a bad An Cnoc yet. Hopefully this won't be the first. This is one of three limited edition expressions in collaboration with Scottish artist and designer, Peter Arkle.

Nose:
Toffee and spice with citrus undertones.

Palate:
Oak and spice with toffee sweetness at first, followed by citrus and a hint of dried fruit. Adding water simply dilutes the flavours - this one's definitely better neat.

Finish:
Longish with spice and a hint of liquorice. Also a bit of leather.

Another nice An Cnoc and, at only £49.25, a very good whisky for not a lot of money. Just don't put water in it. It's only 46% ABV so doesn't need it anyway.
