The OCZ Vertex 3 Thread

Using a sata 3 port 0 I believe but would need to double check and yes ACHI is set in BIOS.

Will try using a sata 2 to do the update and see what happens.

Still a lot of jumping through hoops for these OCZ drives!! Seems like this is something that should have been ironed out a while ago or at the very least leassons leanrt form the first gen drives?

That's why it won't update. Change it to IDE... NOT AHCI. Once in IDE mode it will update properly. Make sure to switch back to AHCI and make sure to clear your CMOS after. I strongly advise you follow the steps listed on the OCZ forum for updating firmware.

Ahh ok. I did a lot of reading before trying to update but dont recall coming accross that anywhere, changing from ACHI to IDe and back again.

Will try it tonight when I get in. Thank you

Follow these steps:

I can't find the info about using IDE mode, maybe that was for using secure erase. I am fairly sure I updated my firmware in IDE mode. Just try and follow their steps and you can't go wrong :).

I have followed the steps but when I choose to update firmware it just fails. It doesnt say the drive is locked or frozen it just fails. I tried the drive in IDE mode but same thing.

Tempted to just borrow a laptop and hook it up as an external drive and use the windows util. Before I do that though I will try updating using the SATA 2 port and see what that does.

Did you try using the bootable linux updater?

Yes. Got it setup on the pen drive. I can boot to it fine. Got an internet connection and I can see the icon on the desktop to update OCZ firmware it's just it fails everytime I run it.

Wouldnt be because the firmware is so old would it? I do know it will have to update to 2.06 before I can update to the latest firmware release (current version on my drive is 2.02)

Not sure to be honest. I used the windows toolbox to update from 2.02 to 2.06 and didn't have any problems. I've not upgraded from 2.06 though as I've not yet installed an OS on the drive to see if there any issues. Are you able to try updating in another PC?

That is strange, maybe drop a thread on the OCZ forum and get one of the staff there to help?

Can someone point me in the right direction please ?

I have a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard and a OCZ Agility 3 60 gig SSD for my system drive. I'm getting about 400mb a sec top read speed but I'm using the SSD cable that was already in my board (normal sata 2). Would it be worth buying a new SATA 3 cable ? Would I get that extra speed ? Oh do I have the Intel controller or is it something else ?

You have an X58 chipset which only support a Marvell controller unfortunately and top out at about 350-400MB/s read. Another thing you need to make sure is that you bench with ATTO and not to do it too often otherwise it will force your SSD into a 'throttle' state. But yeah, X58 = no Intel Controller = slower speeds. No way around it other than to upgrade to a chipset like Z68. All of the seperate controller cards also use the Marvell controller. An intel controller card = MEGA bucks.

exactly, no one else is having problems as bad as OCZ so this is not a general SSD issue as one of the above posters said, this is just a case of major fail at OCZ.

I've recently updated my rig (see sig). My drive has the 2.11 firmware on and after a fresh win 7 install, i'm getting full on speeds for both read and writes, 500-550MBps at the higher transfers.
Yes OCZ dropped the ball on this one, but when they work, hell are they fast.

This isn't too good then....

Do I need to read the whole 15 page thread, or can someone throw me a link to read? :)

It's sat on a P8Z68-V Pro.
