*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

A 10gbps is fine. Games are not something that is accessed like RAM.
Yeah divide 10 Gigabit by 8 and you get MB/s. So your enclosure will run the SSD at up to 1250MB/s read and write. My Crucial X6 ext SSD runs at about 800MB/s read and write which is ok.

Unfortunately there’s not many or no benchmarks for M4 chips that will test the performance of an SSD drive.

Got the DP cable to try tonight, also ordered a 16” 3k OLED monitor which will be placed vertically to use as a 2nd monitor. Think I will power that with HDMI from the Mac Mini.

So Caldigit will use DP for main screen at 4k (currently thunderbolt). Mac Mini will drive 2nd screen via HDMI 2.1.

That will free up 1 Thunderbolt port from the Caldigit.

I could even drive the 16” screen with thunderbolt only with no external power…I might even try that, it would save an extra cable.

Here it is...

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MW5L3ZM/A/usb-c-to-usb-adapter

£19 pretty steep! The superdrive is £79, I paid £79.17 ex VAT for my Pioneer Blu-Ray Writer back in 2019.
They work though and it's handy to have at least one around in the event an external device doesn't work with a third-party adaptor.
Worth looking at second hand as i've managed to pick up a handful in the past for pounds each (and they all appear to be legit from the serial numbers).

It seems they go for stupid money even on eBay, cheapest one is like £13 for a used one and a few people selling it for £25?

Luck of draw but i would set up a few 'saved' searches with variations/spelling of 'apple usb-c adaptor' and just wait it out.
Cheapest one i got was £2.33 inc, most expensive was £5 + £1.99 delivery, all from eBay - so sure, not literally pounds but still cheaper than new.

My 4K monitor has a USB C input on the back, could I run this through the TB5 port and then put a second monitor using the HDMI port?

Funny you mentioned that Raymond..I was looking at a "portable" monitor for a second when needed..?

Thunderbolt passthrough? If it has it, then it is Thunderbolt into the monitor and another thunderbolt out. I don't think it can take HDMI out though, I think HDMI ports in monitors are all INPUT only. I could be wrong but you can try.

As for the monitor I ordered...I hope I got the right one! I swear I had one with Touch feature in my basket, and notice the price has dropped 10% so I bought it. Checked and then saw I bought one without touch feature....and then I realised why. The one with touch feature had sold out and I think somehow it changed to the other?! Or it could be me who added into my basket wrong. But it's shipped already lol

Although 2nd thought, it could be best anyway as Mac OS doesn't have touch so it would be pointless spending extra 10% for something that the software won't do. It is also a bit too big as a portable monitor being 16", a 13" one would be better and those are a lot cheaper.

the storage module is a thing boys, with some consistently positive feedbacks happening.

Monitor? You bought a monitor?
