*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

@Raymond Lin quick question mate, I bought the 3 year AppleCare+ for the £99..can I extend that after the three years to a "rolling" yearly fee?

if not no big deal, three years is plenty for me! lol

There are options beyond the 3 years, yeah. If I recall I got an email and a notification on the device saying AC was coming to an end, and had the option of a rolling monthly cover. Could change 3 years from now of course, but there will certainly be something I'm sure.

Had to switch back to my Windows laptop. I could not live with Mac OS, it seems antiquated compared to Windows. Love the hardware, but the OS na. It's like Linux but with none of the pluses.

There's so much to like but I've given up for the time being too. The dev tools I use are 'supported' in Mac OS but definitely not to the same degree as in Windows. The last release is actually broken and rolling back seems to have caught the same cold and didn't rectify the issue.

I found a new nvme enclosure that is fanless but with a decent fin for cooling which is half the price of the OWC! I can't link but name is.

Hagibis 40Gbps USB4 M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure With LED Display USB4 Cable for Thunderbolt 4/3 USB 3.2/3.1/3.0 B+M M-Key SSD Case

Someone posted a speed test, looks good!

Yeah fantastic for an external drive, for reference these are my internal Crucial P3 Plus 4TB PCI-E 4.0 NVMe and my brothers Crucial T700 1TB PCI-E 5.0 NVMe...

You're not really going to notice the difference a 3700MB/s read/write drive is fast enough for anything.

I think we need to bear in mind that the base Mac mini internal SSD is only around 3000mb/s too! There is also the limit of Thunderbolt 4.

Yeah still plenty fast enough, these internal drives look good in benchmarks but overkill for 99.9% of people. The 2TB Crucial X6 external SSD drive I have plugged into my Mac is around 800MB/s read and write and I'm happy with that.

Found this on reddit. OWC one seems to work!

Although whilst it is $7.99 on their site, it is like £18 on the popular retailer and at least like £13 in other lesser known ones. WTF?

@Raymond Lin did you receive your AliExpress stand yet? I don't like any of the MM4 stand docks yet so I'm thinking of getting a stand to raise the MM4 up for, potentially, better airflow and buy a TB4 Dock like a Sabrent or UGreen one.

Not yet...the seller hasn't shipped for ages so I cancelled it.

I have ordered the Ulanzi vertical stand that makes it look like a Mac Pro that should start shipping end of the month. So I will try that first before doing anything else. It depends how I want to set up my desk, vertically or horizontally, that will have more a bearing on which stand I use. I know I can't be doing without one for my whole ownership because the way I have to do it is just awkward. A cheap stand like that walnut one will be well justified.

The front panel is attached to the case with magnets.

Official Apple adaptor works! No error about not enough power.

I hate I had to do this....argh.

edit - tested it connected to the Caldigit, doesn't work. Even though there is no error message, nothing happens. It doesn't suck the disc in.

I bought the UGREEN Revodok Max 208 TB4 dock yesterday. I was looking at various options and after working out what I need connectivity wise, the 208 would be more than enough. Works a treat and I'm thinking of designing, and printing a stand for it and have it sat under the Mac Mini.

The Revodok 213 was £230, how much was your 208? Online suggest it’s £260.

The TBT4 is £300. It doesn’t seem that much more than the 208.

So the Raycue 40gbp/s has started shipping according to reddit....just saw it on there site. No front ports, just basically add 2 USB-A and audio jack with an internal SSD.

So it's more a nvme SSD enclosure with 2 USB ports basically. I mean the price isn't bad a 40gbp/s nvme enclosure with good cooling and a tidy matching enclosure...just a bit disappointing that it doesn't have any thunderbolt capabilities at all. I guess I could upgrade one of my £15 10gbp/s to it.

When I first bought the MM4 I did think I wanted something to go under it, with good connectivity and be 40gbp/s. Now I have bought the TB4 Dock/Hub I'm happy with that. The MM4 is off the desk and on a table next to my desk, I do need a new desk as mine was for an ultrawide only setup but now I have 2 32" normal monitors and the desk isn't wide enough, with the TB4 Dock/Hub on my desk. Only issue I have is the supplied TB4 cable is only 0.8m and whilst it reaches OK, I need to buy a longer one so I can route it a little better.
