****The Official 7900 overclocking thread****

Would someone be kind enough to explain how the memory/pencil mod is done?

I went to vr zone but the pic that explains how/where to do it is dead :(

I've got 1.55v going though the core atm, its reaching 730MHz.

Wow is that with watercooling or the vf900?

I would take a photo of my pencil mod location for you, but im unable at the moment. Im also finding it very hard to find an appropriate pic on the internet that i could use to show where its done.

Thats with the vf900 i got today.

Idle temps went from around 50, down to around 40.
Amazingly, load temps went from 85+ to 50-55, well pleased with that.

Does the 2nd pic at http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=94177 show where it is? I get the impression it's resistor K, although i dont see how pencil would help anything, unless the pencil marks form a 'parallel resistor'?

A bit of wind blowing over it would well **** up your memory chips if you had them running at a high freq.

No that pic doesnt show it, i might attempt to make my own pic on Paint :p

The part that gets shaded is on the opposite side from where the vcore mod is done. Hard to explain, but i'll do a pic for you.

EDIT: well heres my pic :)

The resistor that gets shaded is the third one down in the pic, you cant miss it with that big red arrow :p
The pic is slightly out of proportion but you should be able to see where all the bits are.

Lol that pic is actually pretty damn good, appreciate the effort :P

It's so good that i can tell which one it is from http://www.gdhardware.com/hardware/video_cards/leadtek/7900gt/002.htm

Do i shade over the physical processor, or do i shade between the connection points? (to form a parallel circuit so to speak)

If it's just on top of the processor, i dont understand how it'd do anything.. unless its a photoresistor (which it's not :P)

Currently running my 7900gt at 650/900, with a Zalman VF700-cu. It's done 30 minutes in ATITool artifact tester with these clocks, with no error detected, although temps are at 65C (idle temps are low to mid 40s). These temps are a little higher than I'd like, although these chips should be able to handle such temps. The only problem I'm having is that Doom3 starts showing some very minor artifacts and generally behaving oddly after about 30 minutes. When D3 came out, I remember John Carmack saying that previously stable OCed rigs might hve problems with D3. Maybe D3 is just revealing a slight instability at these clocks so I should ease back a bit.

Ginga

I also found that having the memory clocked extremely high causes slight problems. Mine was at 1980mhz for a while, then one day my screen froze and these wierd green and red horizontal lines appeared. This happened with just windows media player and an explorer windw open!
So its now at 1900mhz to be safe. Im guessing the memory might be causing your problems aswell Ginga.

7900GT...rock my world...

Just thought I'd add my 2p's...

After an initial fiasco with a BFG 7900GT, it got sold on ebay and I got a XFX 7900GT. The BFG was doing some strange stuff.

Anyway got my XFX today and got the electronics tool box out, did the 1.4V mod in 30secs, installed the VF900 and mem sinks and clocked here to:

Core: 650Mhz
Mem: 1760Mhz

3dMark 2006 gives a whopping 4778 with an Athlon 64 3200 (next on the upgrade list).

Played BF2 for 45mins fine, played FEAR for 30mins and run ATI tool for about 10mins.

All seems good here. Tip top bang for the bucks. Highly recommended. :p

I'll see how I go. I haven't check if the core goes beyond that at 1.4V.

My aim was to get the GT at GTX speeds so I'm happy. It's rock stable like this, played BF2 for 3hrs non-stop late last night (10pm-1am is the daily dose :p ) and it run great.

I might explore how far it can go. I guess that with the VF900 and 1.55V it should go to 700Mhz, like the factory overclocked GTX's.

Plenty fast at the mo anyway! :D

Very very impressive. I might be able to compete with you on 3dmark05 after doing the volt mod myself, but your 06 score is outragous (because of the dual core processor). Do any single cards out there get these sort of scores on stock settings? Maybe a 7900gtx XXX edition.

I got 6300 & something with a BFG 7900 GTX at stock.
At work at the moment so cannot post a link.

Seems to be running stably overclocked to 730/1860

Will run 06 again & see what increase I get.

*edit*

Managed to publish my 06 score with my BFG 7900GTX at stock (670/1640)

6324

Yeah, that is pretty close. I look forward to seeing if you're gtx can beat vocch's insanely overclock gt. (I think it probably will....but not by much).
