*** The Official Alder Lake owners thread ***

I saw the new BIOS update for my Gigabyte board, for the same reasons you note in terms of next gen support.
I haven't bothered to install it, there is no need at this stage. It is running fine and would prefer to keep it that way.
I couldn't consider needing to "upgrade" for some time. My "toy fund" is being stretched in other directions in these times of escalating prices.

Great that you seem to have found stability for so long now, I didn't think that you would notice any meaningful differences with trying to push for 3600Mhz and 64GB of RAM. Diminishing returns, and all that.

Good DDR5 performance benefits here. Also to keep in mind that DDR5 gains a lot from tuning so there's definitely a lot of performance left on the table here as well. In general, going forward, it'll be hard to recommend DDR4 for RPL if you want long term gains.

I don't think Spider-man is a logical game to do this sort of test on given the questionable high variance in CPU usage for a game that should not have such high CPU usage vs other much more demanding games. They should have chosen a game where CPU usage isn't all over the place. Even in the spider-man thread we have people from both AMD and Intel chips seeing 60%+ CPU usage and that's at 1440P or above which makes no sense. what is the game engine doing to have such a cost on the CPU? It certainly isn't anything that's visually noticeable. I see HWUB's angle, brand new game that's popular means you hit that like ratio on youtube....

Yeah DDR5 is and will be the way to go, but the cost vs performance gains vs DDR4 don't warrant that ship jumping just yet, still a ways to go.

On the contrary I think it makes sense that it is heavy on the cpu. Lots of npcs, huge city and fast speeds means roaming around means a lot of asset streaming. Also ray tracing is very heavy on the cpu

Ray tracing in this game is basically only reflections, other games that employ heavier RT effects have considerably less hit on the CPU since that's what the GPU is for. with all those RT cores The sprawling city is fine but it is mostly empty/bland set pieces with repeating props and buildings throughout - There is nothing visually in spider-man that shows itself to be heavily demanding on the CPU, let alone GPU really compared to many other games that do a lot more where an open game world with lots going on is concerned, Cyberpunk immediately comes to mind.

Even though the performance is excellent even maxed out everything, the CPU usage doesn't represent what every other game seems to dictate compared to what you are getting visually. What is the CPU doing? There aren't enough city NPCs for it to be demanding on the CPU, by contrast Cyberpunk's population density is superior yet CPU usage hovers around the 35% mark on the same CPU. it can't be doing RT Lighting as that's what the RT cores are for, streaming assets I could understand but streaming what exactly, the city is mostly empty textured otherwise!

CPU usage just doesn't add up in that game.

What does that even mean? It's a well priced range of high quality high performing AIOs and the issue only affects the gasket used in various batches from a certain date range. Nothing to do with the AIO/pump itself which are excellent quality - Just as reviewed. Did you watch the video?

And how can an AIO be the ugliest? They look like any other non-RGB AIO.

That's a right pita.
Only in that you gotta take the case side panel off and re-paste the CPU really :p

I will do mine next year since the GN findings is that after a couple of years the old gasket starts to go bad. By that time I will already have upgraded to 13700K or 14700K I guess so be about ripe time to do this job anyway which appears to take no more than 5-10 minutes.

Remove cables, side panel off, unmount, clean cpu, remove block, fit gasket, possibly top up, fit plate, repaste and then remount, recable, test. Your 5-10 minutes is more like 30 or more. That's leaving the rad in as well.

Then you just hope the gasket is perfectly aligned and the screws remounted with the correct torque otherwise it's potentially pretty nasty.

Terrible design flaw. Send it off to us in Germany for free and have no cooler for weeks :D

There is no need to go overboard here lol, torque in this context is "when the screw stops moving" as noted by Tech Jesus above - If you've done stuff like this before then it will be pretty obvious when to stop etc :D

Using some TM cleaner and spreading some new paste takes little time too!

Cables, just a bunch of cables to unplug :p

Ok with everything else let's say 30 mins tops.
