** The Official ASUS P5N-E SLI & Ultra 650i Thread **

Opps forgot it wasn't in my Sig anymore.

A Hiper 530

Its running:

6600
p5n-e
2gb ram
8800
6 Fans
1DVDRW
2HDD

So i think that i'm pushing it.

Might have to upgrade to be able to get it stable.

530W should be ample with an 8800GTS and the Hiper's are actually close to their quoted power ratings, unlike some I could mention.

Hi,

I'd appreciate some help too, I have followed WJA's guide but can't get much above 1200 on the FSB (using an E2140). I'm fairly sure that the board is limiting it, as if I up the NB voltage to 1.78V (the highest) then it gets to the Windows screen before locking up (it will get into Windows if it is cool though, but crashes fairly quickly).

However I'm not really comfortable doing this for such a moderate overclock, as even at 1.58V the stock cooler is too hot to touch, it seems ridiculously warm. Would getting another NB cooler help? I think it would need a fan to lower it much.

The only other thing is the PSU is relatively old, but good quality I think - an X-pro 430 watts (needs a 20-24 pin atx converter though). My corsair 520 is being RMA'd at the moment. I'm not sure how much difference this would make.

My memory is crucial ballistix 5300 2GB and the cooler is the Noctua one.

Thanks

edit: bios is 0604

Is anyone who is running the 0602 BIOS getting problems posting when a USB device like a card reader is plugged in?

Without the reader plugged in ( ive tried an external one and an internal one directly on the usb header ) the board bppts fine - with it plugged in it freezes at the splash screen

Only happens since i put 0602 on it

Check your boot device order - it's probably trying to boot of the usb key.

Northbridge cooling is everything with the 650i boards - but beware the fsb holes. try booting at 1450qfsb. or 1507 qfsb.

Ive managed to solve another problem tho :)

Using the onboard network port kept giving me limited connectivity - even after reformatting. Using a PCI card it was fine

Ive just intalled the network driver for the 680i chipset and bingo - it works

I've sorted my Southbridge cooling thanks to Akasa, got the little blue LED headsink. if i got enough money this week i'll either get the Noctua Northbrigde one or *** thermaltake one, then try to OC it again.

Anyone know that Temp 3 is on Speedfan??

There are my current temps:

I've had this board for a while, and everything seemed to be running fine. I installed Vista a couple of months ago, decided it wasn't for me, and wanted to go back to XP. So far so good. I got my XP disc out, put it in the drive and the thing wouldn't boot from the cd, it just kept going into Vista.

I fiddled around, swapping cables and whatnot and tried again... still didn't work. I checked the disc in my ancient laptop that's about an inch from death and it booted straight into setup.

I went out this morning and bought a new DVD drive, installed it and tried again... still didn't work. The old drive was IDE and the new one is SATA, so I guess that rules out the cd drive, right?

So is it the motherboard? I've been having problems getting it to recognise a new sata hard drive as well. I updated the SATA drivers for the board and now I can't even boot into windows.

I'm thinking it might be time to RMA. Any other ideas?

Of course! I should have said I'd done that. I just flashed my BIOS, but it made no difference except it's slightly more up to date than it was.

I had exactly the same problem mate, i found one way to get around it, that was to open the cd drive, then close it again right at the start of boot sequence.

that caused the disk to spin up and say "Boot from CD"

dunno if that will work for you, but it worked for me.

Turn on the system... open the cd tray, then close it as soon as the bios/flash screen goes away. Then it should whizz up, and hopefully boot.
