***The Official ATI Radeon HD 5850 / 5870 Reviews and Discussion Thread***

Just heard a rumour that the Asus Voltage Tweak 5870s are decent clockers, so hopefully with some extra voltage these things will fly ahead.
Hi there

Well overclocking wise they seem very good! :)

Your looking at 1000-1050MHz on the core on the 5870!
In the region of 5200MHz-5500MHz on the memory.

Needless to say these things can be cranked up quite a bit. :D

claiming that the ati dx11 cards that are coming in a few months(ended up delayed) will render the gtx 295 obsolete and that its pointless to buy a gtx 295 etc. well it wasnt really...

I think it has rendered the 295 obsolete hasnt it?

It's generally cheaper, has close performance to the 295 beating it sometimes, DX11 and most important of all you don't have the faff with multiGPU.

Unless the price was significantly different who would buy a 295 over a 5870 now?

I'm not knocking the 295 and I'm sure owners of it are very happy.

I'd imagine the 295 will now respond by falling in price.

well the benchies look very impressive, not far behind the gtx 295 which is a good thing, but its still behind and i know its single gpu and 295 is dual, and there is only 30 quid difference between the 2, but if your a die hard nvidia fan is single gpu and 30 quid enough to tempt you accross the water as to speak, i dont think so and thats what amd need to do to gain market share tempt peaople away from nvidia, and with nvidia's new card looming even less so, in my experianece people buying these very high end cards dont actually care about power consuption and only care about heat because they want to o/c, also the 5870 xfire dosent pull away from the 295 like you would expect either which is a good example of how the 5870 x2 will perform, so i presume nvidia fans will still prefer the 295, just my view,

as for noise i refer you to a review i picked at random
http://hothardware.com/Articles/AMD-ATI-Radeon-HD-5870-Unquestionably-Number-One/?page=13

i like the line

oh edit: I rest my case

I think people are missing a bigger point here. From what I read the card is almost silent when idle. Now my question to anyone is what is your machine doing when under load? I bet 90% of poeple will say playign a game so this brings me to my point of....do you not have game sound on when playing games? Personally I use headphones and cant hear a bomb drop let alone a gpu fan.

That's what the 5870x2 is for :-)

so i presume nvidia fans will still prefer the 295

Of course they will - brand loyalty and all that.

The 8800gtx tempted me away from ATI, the 4870 tempted me back. Now, I'm not sure if the 5870 is another 8800gtx or another 4870 but it's certainly enough to get me to stay with ATI this round. We'll see what March and the NV300 brings :-)

that's another point. when browing the web etc my machine is quiet.

once all fans turned up and playing a game i have sound on so don't notice the fans.

only time i hear them is if i'm benching, have no sound and i've overclocked the cards and have the fans set to 70%

frankly, i'm still on an 8800GTX and the only thing i can't run at a comfortable FPS 100% of the time is Crysis. i don't expect i'll upgrade my 8800 untill it breaks...

Im still on an BFG 8800GT OC2 which runs pretty much anything I throw at it fine @ 1680 x 1050.
I wont upgrade till next year to take advantage of sata3 and usb3, and I will make a choice then between 5870, 5870X2 or GT300, depending on which is best.
Im not a fan boy, though I rate my 8800GT highly, Im impressed with the 5870 which pushes a dual gpu card from nvidia pretty close in most games on beta drivers - hats off to AMD, prices will fall, and they have brought a great card to market

On one of the threads, it was mentioned that a big order [300 units] is expected in time for Monday; lots of back orders though so if you are committed to buying, probably best to get one reserved/pre-ordered I'd imagine, rather than going through the rigmarole of trying to get to the site early in the morning again...

Hmm... slept in a bit - expected them to go up early afternoon.

Performance is quite impressive. The 4870 was around the performance of the GX2/X2 from the previous generation so this is fair game from ATI. If you want performance that's miles ahead of anything that was on offer you need either a pair or an X2.

Stocks all gone now, but I think that's a good thing for me. I don't like the look of the coolers, I expect i'd have just bought one for the hell of it, but i'd rather wait for cards like the Vapor-X this time around. Also, despite the staff harping away about prices, these are expensive. I have a reciept for a 4870 at launch that was £175+VAT. I guess having nVidia so far behind in terms of launch schedule is causing stupid-o-prices. I can't see how it justifies an extra £100 over what the 4870 was.

Oh, and Duranmk86's a troll, he tries to justify his 295 everytime he posts. It's quite sad really. I expect he'll be gone soon anyway, duplicate accounts is against the rules after all. ;)
