I didnt play BF1942 but did religious play BF2 and BC2.As much as I love Mack's videos, I do think he's looking back on BF1942 with one hell of a big pair of rose tinted glasses.
While the maps were huge and it was such a ground breaking game for it's time, I also remember grenade spam, poor gunplay and being absolutely annihilated by planes.
Only had a few games of BFV last night, quite liked Rotterdam, but I really do hate that snow map.
There is 'something' about this recent run of BF games that just dont feel right. I play them and I am not getting the same experience as I used to, and its not just an age thing.
I guess for me they feel less like a team game now, I used to remember people really working hard to defend flags, being clever with how they played. I dont get that at all nowadays its just run and gun and hope you dont die.
I think the maps are a large part of the issue, they aren't as well designed as they used to be at all.
My best way of summing it up: Set pieces used to be made by the players with the tools in the game, now they have to literally put them in maps for that wow moment. and yes there was nade spam in bf2, and runway kills etc...but it all added up to the experience, because when you were able to push through that it was super satisfying.
