*** The official beard thread ***

The most my beard gets is a clump on my chin, I don't think I'll ever get a long beard like the 2 above! Any ideas? Just a case of leaving it or should I use a product?

I've never grown a beard before as mainly because I didn't seem to be able to

Took the decision early down in lockdown to give it a go and was horrified by the early (non) results.

It took AGES to look anything like respectable and nowhere near the exemplary examples in here but I quite like it and now have to give it a trim every week to stop it getting unruly

In two minds whether to keep it not

General consensus is to leave it untouched for three solid months and then you'll know whether or not you can pull it off.

I can never get to that point as the patchiness seems to be exacerbated when the other length is getting away from it. But I'm going to do my best to keep it going this time - I've started by telling myself I won't go anywhere near it with the trimmer for the entirety of July.

So I am now in to week 3 having started with a 3mm stubble. I have a 'beard' although if I was to get a shaver and try and cut it a 6mm guard wouldn't take much off so it's still quite short.

However it is looking a bit unkept. Neckline especially and I have uneven hairs across my face.

I think after this week it will be the longest length of time I have left it to grow. but when do I start tidying it up?

My aim long term is not to grow a yeard but a short and tidy beard I suppose. After the 90 days growth I will take my self to a barber to get a professional trim.

I am a bit scared to try my self to define a neckline in case I butcher it. :o

Oh... I also have an annoying swirl on the side of my face. I think it's called a cow lick. After some time and hair growth will I be able to straighten these out or not?

I've also just applied some Bull Dog beard oil. Not bad at all for £3 quid. Doesn't have much of a smell but that's fine prefer it that way. For a first time beards man and a first beard oil I think that's the one to go for.

Yep, 3 weeks will do that.

but when do I start tidying it up?

Hard to say, when it starts annoying you I suppose? Get some beard balm/styler to add some weight to the longer hairs, to bring them down.

As above, a balm or styler will help with bringing this down.

Well as one grows out the beard is it normal to keep it tidy during this growth period or just let it grow loose?

What I would probably do is go over it with a 6mm which in honesty probably wouldn't take much off but hopefully just even it out a little and tidy up the neckline and sides and moustache.

I have a new challenge: beard hairs get EVERYWHERE. They're on my sofa, in my carpet, gathering under furniture. It looks like there's pubes in stuff :(

I dread lending people stuff in case they find a dodgy looking hair :( Or even if I shave, opening drawers and boxes in 10 years and finding hairs.

Is this just my life now? I feel guilty for all the times I was working on someone's laptop and thought I found pubes.

Get a black cat (we have a black and white) and you can always say it's cat's hair :)

I think the general advice is to just leave it for three months, easier said than done I appreciate.

It is annoying when the hairs grow out at different rates, perhaps go for a 6mm if you think it'll be bring it in line, give it x amount of weeks again, then do a 7/8/9mm etc?

Any recommendations for a good beard brush? Something I can get from Amazon.

I've got a couple, one is soft, the other is a harsher, boar bristle variant. I prefer the softer one for the morning brush, and the other for post shower/styling.

I'd find one you like the look off on Amazon and go with it, something like the Seven Potions product.

I'm looking at picking up a dedicated pair of scissors next, allegedly a trimmer can be harsh and give split ends. It's all getting very technical.

Did you end up trimming it back to 6mm? :D

I definitely find this to be true, even with higher quality clippers, I can always feel split ends etc. after, especially obvious when using the towel to dry my beard, can feel the yanking of beard hairs caught in the towel...... But my beard is very coarse and thick, which probably doesn't help!

So have taken to just trimming with a standard pair of scissors over the last month or so now.

No matter what beard wash, oil etc. I use, I can never get my beard to be super soft and shiny like others.

- tried many beard oils, back to the honest amish one currently
- used beard balms
- tried beard shampoos and conditioners (I don't really ever use conditioner even for my head now tbh, just doesn't seem to suit any hair of mine), I need some new shampoo for the beard now tbh, any recommendations anyone? Been using this one for a while now

Glad to know I'm not alone. Might have to try some scissors instead!

My beard is very coarse in the places that it does grow, (I have patchiness which has slowly been improving as I get older). I haven't tried any shampoos or conditioners, not sure if I think it's worth it or a faff :D

Here are some pics if anyone wants to see. I started with 3mm and have left it to grow now for 3 weeks.

The pics actually make it look much better than I feel about it. I have an annoying cowlick in pic 3 which has hairs growing back and round my face. I'm hoping with a bit more length I will be able to straighten them out.

Also you can see my cheeks are quite thin. I'm hoping they will fill in with time.

Any one if any one wants here you go:
