The official canon 5d mk4 thread

Yeah I'm watching the 5D3 price daily in the hope they save a few hundred off and will put the rest towards a 24-70. In 3 years time I will do the same and get the 5D4. If I made a living out of it of course I would think differently but my 50D doesn't have 8k actuations on it, so it would be a bit extravagant to spend 4.5k on the combo.

My 5d3 has 47k shutter counts.....

ok i will bite, like what? apart from rattle thrown out of pram wanting more for less, as this happens on every new camera release and they still sell by the bucket load.

Dunno.

Maybe because it doesnt have 100mp and shoot 4k in 90fps in a 8gb card containing 1 hour of footage..

Outdated memory card slots.
No 4K HDMI output.
5 times the size for 4K video due to codec.

It's not more for less. The A7R2 have faster cards, native 4K and lower file size for less money.

They should lose the filter on the sensor too.

Umm the a7r2 has outdated card slots too mate. Shocking battery and buffer rate and larger file sizes for stills .

I use and own a a7r2

The real question with the release of the 5D Mk 4 is this : has Canon hit a brick wall with its technology development, or is it taking extreme measures to protect its flagship products by handicapping prosumer merchandise ?

Neither reality is particularly palatable for those heavily invested in Canon gear. If Canon truly is struggling with R&D then that is bad for the photographic industry ; on the other hand if they are deliberately holding back on advancing their products then that is a slap in the face for the millions of loyal fans.

What do you think ?
Ok then if they was to produce the 5d4 with every top end feature available inside, tell me, what will happen to there cinama line, 1d line and there 5ds line?

Do tell me what will happen to those cameras.

How can the video be a downgrade from the Mark III? Nothing got worse.

The Mark IV has a 30 megapixel sensor that apparently has a slightly better dynamic range, instead of a 22 megapixel sensor.

The Mark III records video at 1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25, 23.976 fps fps), 1280 x 720 (59.94, 50 fps), 640 x 480 (25, 30 fps), whilst the Mark IV records in 4096 x 2160 (29.97p, 24p, 23.98p), 1920 x 1080 (59.94p, 29.97p, 24p, 23.98p), 1280 x 720 (119.9p).

They've added 4K video to the Mark IV. The Mark III doesn't have it. I appreciate compared to some cameras with 4K capabilities it isn't up to par, but it is an addition to a Camera series that didn't have it before.

Lastly have you seen the videos of the Dynamic HDR video recording on the Mark IV?

Well said, Its not a downgrade. Nothing on the 5d4 is a downgrade compared to the 5d3.

Listen im all for critisism of the camera and my main grip is the card slots(they could have made it faster and it wouldnt harm the 1dx2 series as its still faster and more robust) and af point spot metering.

So after me using the camera compared to most here who are just bashing it based on spec sheets, this is my critisism so far.

  1. No linked spot metering on AF points
  2. Cant add the wifi on/off settings in the quick menu's or assign a button to it
  3. Old tech card slots( should have gone with cfast or two cf card slots or cf card and UHS II sd card slot)

Not much to complain about and maybe the wifi quick setting could be fixed in a firmware but thats about it.

We can all pick and slate every single camera out and critise it.

I seem to be the only person here that has this camera so i imagine my own perspective from using it in the real world is more valid then most of the peoples complaints here.

Yea the canon has some outdated suff but at least the sensor is up to date now as well as the AF system.

When it comes to stills, dont you think AF and IQ is important?

Hmm don't do it :)

They might be a cliché and an apocryphal story, but remember the following...

1) The best camera is the one that you have with you :)

2) Old chap walks over to a photographer with a tripod, expensive DSLR and a host of fancy lenses. Taps the photographer on the shoulder and says "bet that takes brilliant pictures?" The Photographer replies "No it's never taken a decent picture since the day it was made". The old chap looks stunned and says "gosh, it looks really expensive surely it takes good pictures?". The photographer smiles and says "No, it doesn't take good pictures... I do."

yup.

well said. forget people here hating on Canon. let them lol

The problem I see is that Smart phones have come a very long way and evolved to what the consumers wants ( well mostly ) and have some very good features.

Now the DSLR market still holds on to very traditional design and ideals. Tech and consumers have moved on a lot to what is to be expected, ie touch screen, WiFi, Blue Tooth, GPS, sharpness, quick AF, fast memory, to name a few.

The likes of Canon and Nikon do not have a smart phone, TV, or computer division to borrow hardware / parts / knowledge to incorporate in to the latest cameras.

Consumers should by now have moveable and touch screens, WiFi, Blue Tooth, and more intuitive menus. Again look at the smart market

The think canon need to address is the sensor as IMO they are behind the competition.

Canon need to either pay SONY to supply the sensors or get their R&D dept to get a crack on !

I would even go as far to say that mirrorless might even be the way forward for DSLR as the bodies are very bulky considering what is not inside them ie what I have stateted above.

The bodies could even be released in different colours as well, especially the lower entry DSLR’s
First of all the 5d4 sensor is as good as sony's now

2nd of all, despite sony making tv's and mobile touchscreen android phones with nice UI etc, there A7 series cameras have poor UI, no touchscreen and no GPS and bluetooth..
