**** The Official Chinese Phones Thread ****

Just finished setting up the Redmi 5 for the gf's mother, I have to say I'm blown away by the phone. For £66, and 15 days from purchase to delivery with no customs charge too!

It feels like a quality phone, it's very quick and smooth. Camera is impressive, built in apps and mods are very handy. As an S8 user I think I could switch to that phone and not be upset at all.

Lol it makes me laugh and not in a taking the pee sort of way, but but I have used Xiaomi phones for the last 5 years and everyone has got better and better. To see the post above and others in this massive thread that people cannot believe that you can get great build, specs and software for daft money is today. But the likes of get a Scamsung Apple etc and pay way over the odds, they don't care and have been robbing people for years, if you have not tried one give one a go and you will be surprised.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting rubbish, but it definitely exceeded my expectations by far, especially for the one of the lowest price phones they make. I think that Chinese phones definitely have a bit of a stigma, or perhaps a false reputation for being rubbish. I have never really looked into them until recently, and what you can get for your money is truly awesome. I think I will be heaving in this direction once my S8 contract is up.

I have tried many of the import phones, but I still have a Pixel 2 XL as a daily. Value wise, of course, you can't beat the Chinese imports, but I wouldn't put them head to head with a top end device and expect them to come out of them too well. Not the cheaper end of them, anyway.

So, in what exactly is Pixel 2 XL better than VKWorld S8?
Remind you, that the S8 has a very solid body with titanium frame and 5500 mAh battery, it is with an extremely decent camera, octo-core processor and 4GB of memory.

h

Samsung s8? If so, it's 3000mah, 3500mah for plus. Not 5500mah

At the end of the day they all come out of china, same sh"" different brand and quality, people seem to forget that, unless it's scamsung thats made in Korea lol.

The octacore in the vkworld s8 is an old mediatek cpu which itself was mid range when it was released. It's a generation older than the p20, which was slower than the x20 decacore in had in my Vernee Apollo. In short, not even in the same league as a pixel 2.

Seems there's a new version of Lineage OS for gemini that my phone wouldn't pick up on a scan. To simply upgrade can I go into recovery and install the update zip without needing to wipe the cache etc?

Edit: looks I may have answered my own question. Yes seems to be the answer.

I haven't tried that phone. I haven't tried every phone in the world... I'd take a punt and say the camera isn't as good. I would take a punt and say it's probably not quite as smooth. I'd take a punt and say it doesn't get updates as quick and I'd take another punt saying it might not be stock Android.

A quick look at it's specs and I'm happy with those punts. Looks like it's not even on Oreo yet. Looks like it doesn't benchmark very well too so the smooth punt I feel safe with too. Screen brightness can often be an issue on the cheaper devices, but have not info on what this can do.

I bought a Note 4 for someone but wanted to use it myself for a day to see if I could use such a cheap phone myself (coming from a Nexus 6P). I was impressed enough in 10min that I could. It's just astonishing that sub or just above £100 you can get a phone that might be missing a couple of bells and whistles (GPS, NFC, sometimes a decent camera) but is otherwise fine.

Myself I went for the Mi A1 for stock Android (itself just over £100 for the 32GB version recently) and it's great. Same size screen as my 6P to all intents and purposes, but it feels far lighter and smaller in the hand, and the camera is perfectly fine... I'd go as far as saying it's borderline good, only losing out indoors, but is still perfectly usable compared to the 6P (which itself isn't that far away from the Pixel 1 and Galaxy S8).

My only niggle is no front-facing speaker (always a big let down for me, but wasn't surprised) and poor GPS (didn't work as a sat-nav using GMaps last time I tried, so I've kept my dying 6P for sat-nav duty). Battery life is very good too despite the 3080mAh, and I'd go as far as saying it feels faster than my 6P too.

In a way I regret getting the Mi A1 just because I really want the Nokia 7 Plus, but mainly it's because that looks bloody gorgeous in my eyes!

Just ordered a 4gb 64gb Redmi 5 plus for my eldest girl to replace her galaxy note 4 (my old, old note!) £140 inc case etc as mentioned above, actually looking forward to seeing how it performs with a decent big battery.

You mean Redmi 5 Plus? As Note 5 Plus doesn't exist.

Been a while since I was looking at getting another phone, my contact on my LG G4 ends in a month. Been looking at a Chinese phone that has a camera that is as good as the G4... are there any?
