The *Official* Colin Mcrae DiRT Thread

Hello.

I've finally managed to get my steering wheel working in DiRT for the PC. But i'm having huge problems controlling the car without the usual 900degrees steering i should have. I only have 180 degrees of the wheel enabled (cant figure out how to unlock the rest of the wheel in this game).

I've read somewhere that I should fiddle with the steering settings in the game, but i havn't got the foggiest what they mean....can someone please give a difinition of each of the following options please?

Steering dead zone : 0%
Steering saturation : 75%
Steering linearity : 0%

Acc deadzone : 0%
Acc saturation : 100%

Brake deadzone : 0%
Brake saturation : 100%

I can change all of these, but i dont understand what i'm actually changing and mostly it seems to be just as hard to steer the car with lots of different random settings.

Thanks to anyone who gives me a definition of these options. ;)

Is it just me or are the rally stages much harder than the race type stages? For example in the race courses I can usually get first place after a few attempts but on some of the rally courses (when I don't get terminal damage) I am finishing way down the leaderboard.

Maybe it is just the fact that you can see the competitors while racing so you know exactly where you are, I don't know.

Fun game though.

Amen to that. Game installed and running smoothly at 1080 x 768 on rig as per sig.

However the car handling is atrocious, feeels like driving a cross between the hovercraft in that OG Loc mission of GTA SA and a saturated sponge. I've made a bit of progress in the dirt events but even at rookie level I can't place in the rally events.

There seems to be no way to reconfigure the 360 joypad, the shoulder pads are *not* the ideal control for accelerate and brake (I prefer the A & B buttons) and the steering is so hyper sensitive I'm fishtailing and spinning off all over the place. I've tried adjusting some sensitivity to settings to no avail.

And of course in typical console arcade style, unless you can finish the early events you can't progress up the tier. Although the menu indicates you can use points to "buy" new levels, in practice the game seems to open these on a pre-determined basis.

All in all quite disappointed at present, can't really tell the wife as it's a birthday pressie. Still the 2 x Sonata arctica CD's and Ship Sim 2008 shoud compenstae!

Yeah im getting so ****** off with the steering, left, right, left, right constantly to stay ******* straight, back end just keeps whipping out, and i end up off the road, or into rocks etc.... im going to end up taking a hammer to the DVD just like i did with that TOCA game years ago.

Even when you go over a crest and yer lift off the bloody backend whips out so you land sideways and you gota left, right, left, right quickly, ******* nightmare, does anyone know which specific steering command sorts it out before i smash the ****, and why the hell does the stupid co-driver sometimes not tell you whats coming up!!!!.

be a brilliant game if i could just sort the bloody steering out, gfx are stunning, and its fast to, got it maxed out on Ultra, 1280x1024, but the steering needs some work.

Sounds like you need to tweak the saturation and deadzones a little guys. I think you also need to play with the cars setup, tweaking the suspension, camber, diff's etc. :)

Thanks,i'll give all that a go, its no fun at all as its like trying to drive on an ice rink. :p

All the reviews I've read for this game moan about a 'drop in fps', but I haven't yet experienced this or any slow down at all.

When i got the game i left it at its default settings of, i think Medium and it looked stunning and run lovely and fast - surely that's all you need right!?
A day or so later i thought id have a play with the graphics.... tried High for a day - still no slowdown :) Been running it on Ultra for a while now, still no problems

I was wondering whether it could be because i am using XP64?

Patch 1.2 was released yesterday. Get it here

PATCH 1.2:

* Fixed a bug where some saved games were being corrupted during the save process. Saved games are only usable by the PC and user that created them.

* Includes a new set of leaderboards. These are separate to the existing leaderboards which will remain visible for people playing version 1.0 or 1.1.

* Also includes fixes of patch 1.1

PATCH 1.1:

* Fixed a bug where entering the options menu inside the game with no active sound card present would cause the game to crash.

* The game will now display an error message and prompt the user to quit the game when graphics settings are set beyond their hardware capabilities.

* Fixed an issue where on rare occasions vehicle's bonnets/wings would be invisible on entering a race.

* Corrected the minor miss spelling of Portuguese in the game.

* Fixed a bug that caused the game to crash when regaining focus from another application, or the desktop.

* The sound mixer now defaults to SOFTWARE, for improved game performance. D3D and OPENAL are still available, for higher quality.

* Increased maximum Head-cam movement speed by 50%

* 5 axes mode support for Thrustmaster "RGT Force Feedback Pro" wheel

* Fixed a bug where Force Feed Back on controllers would stop working after the user returned focus to the game.

* Fixed a rare bug where it was possible to drive your vehicle before the start lights had gone green.

* Ultra graphic settings modified slightly to be usable with hardware of today.

* Improvements in performance of both internal audio, and external OpenAL drivers

Lol, well i did wonder...

The original patch was 51.5mb and the 1.2 patch is 52.6......The new patch includes the fixes from the first one. So i guess not! :(

Hardly seems worth it to me.

I'm gonna try it in a bit when i get time. It ran sweet for me so hope it will continue that way! :)

This good for my spec and is the fps spot on for hardware or should i get more or less fps in your opinions?

I set res to 1280x1024 with 4x aa and 8x af
set high settings but lowered shadows to medium, turned off motion blur, mirrors.

x2 3800+ toledo core 2.6ghz
ram 2gb at 173mhz cos of overclock but nice timings of 2.5.3.3.8 1T
x1950pro HIS 512mb AGp 7.5 drivers i think.
xp pro 32bit
audigy zs 2

Gameplay is smooth enough and looks nice enough (no jaggies) for me.

Duno like it felt really nice driving no gfx lag at all. And with fraps off remmeber to add about 5 frames a sec cos fraps eats about that when u use it in games.

Btw its normally 25fps not 21 like screenie that was just for that 1 second.

I'm playing on with a 1900xt on a 1680x1050 screen with xp64, have every thing on low and couple on medium so it runs really smooth. Still pretty as hell on those settings.
