***The Official Core i5 Overclocking Thread***

Hiya,

I have my i5 up and running with an asus P7P55D and the 16000 G.Skill ram and with none off the asus software running i get 0.896 according to cpu-z.

I was playing around with it earlier but found the asus EPU messes with speedstep, well thats the impression i got.

Cpu-z at stock with no asus software shows 2.8ghz with 0.896v, realtemp says 2.67ghz and coretemp says 2.8ghz but not showing vid.

With the asus epu on turbo mode and running prime95 the cpu hit 3.015ghz and highest voltage was 1.216, I have the option to up the mhz with EPU but have not touched it.

This setup is on a swap out and not a fresh install so im sure there are issues with win xp pro at the moment, have not got the 90 day win7 trial (thanks for the info on that Tom|NBK) and probably wont untill Win7 retail is out.

my FPO is: L930B475.

I have not even tried to overclock it yet as my new case is arriving tomorrow and i dont have a non intel cooler.

Don't think I'll get much better than this...

That's a good overclock - would it be stable at that do you reckon?

I'm currently priming mine at 210 x 20 (4.2GHz) and you really don't want to know what sort of volts it's taking to keep it stable.

Bloomin heck - I've just noticed you still have speedstep enabled!

Or maybe not as it's an i860.:( Is there not an i7 overclocking thread yet? (and that wasn't a dig at Easyrider or Big.Wayne).

I thought we had a new i5 winner there. Nevermind.

That's quite impressive jbloggs, well it is if it's actually stable.

When I have sorted the chronic memory/board troubles I am having (I've got a post in the Memory forum about those if you are interested at all) and gotten my fitting bracket off Noctua I will start posting some clocks and temperatures up.

If it's my board that is bad though, or even if it's not, I am thinking I might get rid of it and get something more heavy duty, I bought the UD2 because I fancied mATX (not really sure why even) and it was relatively cheap for a 1156 board.

Now I am thinking to try something much beefier and a bit different to what we already have info on here. I was reading about the new ASRock P55 Deluxe yesterday, it looks like a damn good board and the over-all package seems very good, good value too, although expensive by ASRock's standards. It looks rather better specified than the Gigabyte P55 UD4, Asus P7P55D PRO or the MSI P55-GD65 anyay, which are it's nearest price copetitors at the moment. Indeed it's more like the next line up, like the UD5 and the GD80 etc.

Maybe I'll get one and give it a shot, I've had enough of Gigabyte and Phoenix Bios's of late (I always have prefered the AMI bios, I don't really know why exactly, I just do) and the Asus doesn't have anything on the ASRock when it comes to features or it would seem performance (according to a review I read). Anandtech haven't reviewed it yet, but they have previewed it.

load up prime then see what volts cpu z is giving the chip, give you a rough idea of the vid. Lynnfield chips dont report a vid figure hence why core temp doesnt show it

What cooling is that under mate?

Zalman CNPS10X with Akasa Apache 120mm fan

would it be stable at that do you reckon?

Haven't run Prime yet @ those clocks, have run @ 4.0GHz, temps in high 70s

Really waiting for the better 3rd party coolers coming out ie. Noctua NH-U12P SE and Prolimatech with 1156 adapter kit, the Zalman is just temporary..

superpi isn't exactly stress testing

Never claimed it was...;)

I've just noticed you still have speedstep enabled!

It is disabled, the only things I have enabled in CPU options in BIOS is "CPU Thermal Monitor" and "CPU Multi Threading" (HT)

Still really feeling my way with this setup as this is my first experience with i7...

OK - Don't look at the voltage. I said DON'T LOOK AT THE VOLTAGE.

This is what it's taking to keep this puppy Prime stable at 4.2GHz.

An H50 could cool this - a piece of cake. Or maybe not.

Now it's running warm. We're hitting mid-80's celcius. I think I need a bigger radiator.

Just for future reference, assuming this makes 12 hours of Prime, this is not the chip you are buying next week on Members Market:D

Erm... i looked at the voltage :(

Seriously though, this is one hell of a chip. You think i should get one? I suppose i'd see how far i could push it, then take it back down to 3.2GHz on 1.1v.

I think that while it's interesting to see how the new S1156 i7's clock they're not really comparable to i5's.

The reason I thought you still has speedstep enabled was you had a 21x multiplier and hence I thought it was an i750 in Turbo mode.

I do get the feeling that they run hot though, with you needing 1.4V to get over 200BCLK as well.

Haha, there are other possibilities. Arrandale is supposed to be coming out soon, 32nm CPU core and 45nm 'Northbridge', should be quite good. Only 2 Core/4 Thread though.

Hiw would PC3-PC8500 1066Mhz RAM affect overclocking of an i5

My first reaction when I read that was that you want to use AMD 1.8V RAM - is that right? Intel have managed to screw us over again by making us buy new dual channel 1.65V RAM. The 1.8V 'old' DDR3 won't work in these boards.

If it is 1.65V RAM then it would probably limit your overclock as you'd need to use a very low multiplier and most boards have the lower limit at 3x so you'd almost be overclocking the RAM from stock speeds upwards. I would have to say, yes, it would really affect your overclock.

What difference does it make?

It could change the place he buys his CPU from. Easyrider wants the chip that will do the highest speed and the lowest temperature. So what he wants to know is the results, the steppings and the source of the CPUs.

It's sort of like shopping for the best deal except you're very picky on the exact specification.

Ah ok, its Geil Ultra 3x2gb and its 1.65v but had pretty nice speeds of 7-7-7-20. Im still not decided on Socket 1156 or 1366 but with a triple channel kit i can use it on both, using either 4gb or 6gb

Would 2 sticks of this be any better?
