***The Official Core i5 Overclocking Thread***

If you're going to change the clock yourself you might as well order the individual components and save a little money...

Well im not sure if i want to change the clock. Im just not that skilled at adjusting all the voltages and timings and I find it takes too long for me to get it to what it needs to be.

Unless of course, there are given settings that are known that all i5's can reach that you can just set it too and forget about.

3.6GHz on an i5 shouldn't be particularly tricky even for someone who's quite new to OCing, in fact 4GHz probably shouldn't be terribly difficult either.

are there any really easy to use guides that simply state everything you set everything to and your pretty much guaranteed a safe overclock? I just dont want to spend hours fiddling (I never have much luck with Overclocking it seems)

There will (almost) always be some amount of fiddling to get a decent overclock. Due to the fact there's so much variety between motherboards and chips, different voltage requirements etc, it's impossible to give an exact overclocking guide. If you want to play it safe and not do any fiddling then maybe getting the bundle and leaving it at 3.6GHz is indeed the best option.

The amount of fiddling for my rigs has varied massively from 30mins-1h to several evenings trying to get things just right.

Yeah I think ill go for that, I just dont have the patience to only go up by 1 volt and run 2 hours of prime to then find it crashes and I have to change it to +.5v etc...

I think the kit is best for me.

Got my i5-750, Gigabyte P55A-UD3 (SATA 6Gb/s & USB 3.0 :)) and Corsair XMS3 combo up and running. Seems to clock to 4.0Ghz easily although temps are a little warm at around late 40's/early 50's idle. Only goes to around 72ish max during gaming (BF:BC2) Think I'll leave speedstep enabled so that the temps. are lower when I'm just surfing etc. ATM I am using a Titan Fenrir V2 although I do have a Hydro H50-1 sat here too - so I may try that to see if it can control the temps any better...

4.0Ghz - 20x200 @ 1.344V (Windows)

What coolers is everyone else using?

Scratch that - just started IBT and it hit nearly 90 before I cancelled it! I think I may need to sort my cooler out which is probably what is causing my high idle temps!
Any idea why CPU-Z isn't showing the multiplier drop - I am sure I have C1E and EIST enabled in the BIOS?

Nice. More playing when I got home from work today. It appears the UD3 was over-volting for 4.0Ghz (I had it set on auto.) I set the voltage to 1.3V in the BIOS (1.280V idle CPU-Z) and ran IBT for a few loops. Max. temp was about 80 deg. I'm happy with that!
I'm off to play BF:BC2 - and edit my sig :)

If anyone's looking for a borad recommendation then I can wholeheartedly recommend the P55A-UD3. It's been absolutely solid and overclocking was easy. It's also got SATA 6Gb/s and USB3.0. What else could a geek need eh? ;)

Guys

Would this chip be cooled well enough by a stock cooler @ 4Ghz (if it clocked that well obviously)?

I know 3rd party is best but I'm looking to build a rig with a small budget...

Guess i should add this is on board in sig as Gigabyte got returned due to duff mem slot!

The mem needed a lot of pressure to seat it which could have contributed to
the slot going bad and would not boot with 2 sticks first off....where the asrock memory slotted
in very easy and booted both sticks 1st attempt.

Did you get the p55m pro or just the p55 pro ?

Same position as you - have overclocked 1 board before but this is a whole new ball game. My board and CPU due to arrive Monday (P7P55D Pro with i5 750 2.66GHz and Akasa AK-CCX-4001HP Nero S Direct Contact Heatpipe) so I am researching what I need to do.

Did you ever find an answer to your question re starting values?
