*** The Official Dark Souls II Thread ***

Got my copy this morning, loving it so far, it feels very....different to Demon and Dark souls, its quite refreshing. Beat the first boss so far, took me a few tries as he's a bit awkward to fight (he telegraphs his attacks but he's quite tall and said telegraphs are often not on screen).

There are several additions I don't like, the weapon degradation rate is disgusting as is the price of repairs, the fact you lose health the more you die without using an effigy is flat out insulting, failure is punishment enough, adding the health loss mechanic is an incredibly petty way to increase difficulty/force effigy use.

The only combat issue I've come across so far is the inconstancy of animations, I find that often I can roll cancel attack animations but other times it flat out doesn't work, leaving me to get cut to ribbons.

So far, really enjoying the game but I'm concerned with the way they seem to have tried to "one up" themselves on difficulty, it just feels a bit artificial. Oh and the frame rate can be a bit iffy.

Also the game seems to be a flat graphical downgrade from the first game which is slightly strange.

Not too sure about the downgrade, but the atmosphere of despair is so strong. Even in the town, there just seems to be an air of hopelessness. The game just makes me feel sad :(

Not entirely sure I like the jump mechanic, though.

Loving it overall!

I'm playing on Xbox and I don't see any frame rate issues, not even when I'm carrying a torch and the shadows are bouncing off everything?

As for the game itself? Too early to tell, but I am enjoying it. It's different enough to Dark Souls to make it feel like a new game. Started off as a Bandit and will see how that goes.

Hey Davey, is there any chance you could try DS2 with a PS4 controller assuming you have it on PS3? I'm without a PS3 controller right now and something about the controls feels really wrong when using a PS4 controller. I'm really hoping it's different because I'm really not getting on with them at the minute.
Sorry dude, playing it on 360 so can't help I'm afraid.

No problem, borrowed a mates controller and it's exactly the same. So tempted to sell it on and wait for the PC release.

I'm thinking the same tbh. I can't get over how bad it looks... I swear Demon's looked better! Could this with the framerate issues and it is kind of threatening to ruin what should be a great experience.

Also, the beta looked far better as well. It is the torches that I don't understand. Even on the lowest brightness I haven't come to close to needing one, or lighting one of the hundreds of torch sconces dotted about.

Post sessions thoughts, no spoilers just my take on the game so far.

OK so I'm.....many hours in now and I think I've finally gotten used to the game, took some time and slogging through the starting areas but I think I'm now at a point where I feel FAR more comfortable playing.

I've beaten 5 bosses, got myself into the beginnings of a decent build and have some decent gear and you know what? I think that's all I needed, I now feel like I'm playing Dark Souls for real, the thing that was bothering me so much was mostly just my complete lack of knowledge about the game, it seems being so used to knowing DS and DkS like the back of my hand had just jaded me.

I have to say the game feels very much like a step back AND forward from DkS, it takes many aspects of Demons Souls what with the much more serious atmosphere (something DkS lacked compared to its predecessor) but also has the sense of scale of DkS, if so far lacking some of the awe.

Besides that, I love the addition of a much more in depth item system as well as a far more...lets say forgiving inventory system, allowing for more weapons/rings/consumables means you feel slightly more prepared if not safer.

Also some of the subtle (and not so subtle) nods to the previous games are brilliant.

The combat I'm not yet entirely sold on, it just feels far less fluid than I'm used to, like every move you make takes longer. Also combat seems heavily weighted in the enemies favour for some reason.

I'm not really sure if the extensiveness of the Fast Travel system is a good idea but considering some of the mechanics of the game I certainly wouldn't get rid of it.

So yeah, I'm really enjoying myself now, I think I was expecting both too much and too little, I wasn't really prepared for a game as its own as Dark Souls 2 is.

Im not sure i agree with it looking worse than dark souls unless people played that on pc, and are playing this on console, if so i can see in some respects like res and sharpness but overall detail seems stronger here

I think the settngs have been good soo far and the atmosphere is as good as any in the series. Combat has some changes that havent quite clicked yet but ill give it time lol got like 8 hours alone today so may just sit on my ass! :3

Well, I was up until three am playing, that's my endorsement right there! Feels just like it should to me too, the dodgy hit boxes has been a feature of all three games, nothing new there.

I also disagree strongly about it being a graphical downgrade, it just has a distinctly different look to it.

There are certainly things I do not like, such as the inability to repair a weapon until it has broken, what on earth is that all about? Possibly I have yet to find the correct blacksmith...

However, either I've gotten quite used to the series or it is significantly easier than the previous games, in some five hours of playing I've only died twice, one of those caused by my impatience and easily avoidable. It was a shock to get to a new fire so easily after the brutal education I had trying to get through that first section of the undead burg in ds1.

Having talked to the NPCs n Majula it's clear that the initial part of the game has been made somewhat easier than DS1 to ease newcomers into the game, especially with the training area in Things Betwixt.

I may be wrong but i think resting at bonfires fixes weapons too?
