***The Official E4300 Overclocking Thread***

To answer an orthos question above. I assume you mean you want it to test the full range of ffts possible? If you select Small FFTs, then Custom, it shows you the small fft settings. For example I'm getting 8 to 64. Do the same with Large FFTs and you get bigger numbers, 128 to 1024. Now for blend, they're even larger, as they don't need to run in place (in the cache), they can go from 8 to 4096.

So yes, blend will do the most work. However, my personal favourite is a combined "in place test". The lower bound from Small FFT and the higher bound from Large. Eg. 8 to 1024 tests both caches, but if you tick "run ffts in place" it doesn't use any memory. The easiest way to test cpu thoroughly if you know mem is not an issue.

You must be tired mate :)

Excellent definition of "my computer is future proof": It will last at least a year. Genius!

ROFL
now you are contradicting yourself here psypher, do you want future proof or do you want it to last a year? if you want future proof you will have to spend ridiculous amounts of money to get a high spec that may last 2 years, or you could spend a small amount and you should be guaranteed for one year, in my opinion if any new setup doesnt last a year, you were either robbed or cant build a system so whatever you choose it should last a year whether it be a mobo worth £80 or a mobo worth £250

how about a clean install of windows

is this really necessary just now im using a socket 939 asus with an x2 4800 and 2gig ddr ram, upgrading to an e4300 with an asus mobo and 4 gigs of ram, im using xp but vista will be here next tuesday, can i just swap the components and it will work fine or will there be conflicts? shall i delete all drivers before shutting down? uninstall all hardware too?

Yes I would, new mobo drivers etc. Always best to have a clean install.

Is it really necessary? I have changed quite a few mobos before and never re-installed windows xp. I was going from amd to amd though.

It depends if you're staying with the same chipset or not, i changed a number of nForce2 boards without having to reinstall, but when i went to a Via chipset my pc went nuts.
So if your're goin from AMD - Intel then there will be different chipsets so the regisrty will be different to the actual components installed so there will be errors on startup.

I always prefer to play it safe and clean install whenever changing mobo.

I'll try this one without being "sweary"!

Can i not just switch the mobo/cpu and load the new drivers? I'm loathe to re-instal XP. Presumably if I did I'd have to re-instal just about everything else as well? In particular iTunes. I've already had to "allow/enable it 5 times for this computer" and it said something about 5 being the limit. That is one piece of software that seems to be very delicate. I've had no end of problems with it in the past. As bad luck would have it, it is the only thing the boss at home (wife) is interested in using on the pc. I don't want to have to play around with it, or attempt to speak to their customer support explain and try to get it sorted out.

Wouold it just not work if I loaded the new drivers? Will I have to phone microsoft as well?

There is an option in itunes to deactivate the computer. Do this and you will be able to 'activate' your fresh format afterwards.

Right, thanks. So now the hardest bit will be re-installing Thunderbird and getting it to see all my emails.
