*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

So I've just taken the plunge and ordered the big pack off steam. Now I'm ready to start the game I'm offered the choice to start Elite Dangerous or Elite Dangerous: Horizons. Which do i want? Will i miss anything skipping to Horizons which i understand is the new add on?

Just launch horizons. God knows why it gives you the option not to. You won't miss out on anything at all, it just means you actually get to use the horizons content as well (eg landing on planets etc).

October release confirmed in the newsletter btw for 2.2

Quick question for those at Jacques. What's there?
By that, I mean facilities for ships.

Was thinking of popping out. I'm looking to understand if there's any facilities to outfit a ship if I go out with say a Conda setup for exploration, only to find that I need to shuttle goods and find there's no option to fit cargo racks, or need to have some combat capability. For that matter, is the station even big enough for a large ship.

Any thoughts on what's appropriate and useful out there?
I could happily take a Conda, Python or Asp.

Well, cargo racks don't weigh anything empty, but in terms of facilities I believe there is outfitting and commodities market, and it's a full size station. Not sure what classes of hardpoints are available there though. I plan on going out with my asp and zipping around out there until I can magic my Annie out there with the new update. I'm just doing some FSD upgrades first to make the trip easier.

Take a look on the official forums - last I saw there was A-class rated mining components not sure about other modules. I will be there soon enough so will post my own experience when I get there :)

Station is an Ocellus Starport so has Large landing pads - so no problem there.

I haven't played E:D for about 9 months and fancy trying to revitalise my love for it.

I've got about 200million credits if I sell my anaconda.

I fancy using the engineers to pimp out a ship, but which one ?

I enjoyed the Vulture for bounty hunting, but it is a one trick pony. The python is probably my fave so far as it can be a jack of all trades. Anaconda just felt to big and lethargic.

I fancy spending some time with the engineers and feel that if I pimp out a ship, the python is probably the best al round candidate as with a better FSD and weapons it will become a great all round option.

So what would you guys suggest is the best all round ship for a bit of trading, a few missions and some engineer grinding ? I mostly play PvE rather than PvP if that makes a difference.

Cheers !

Tbh the anaconda is like a big python in the sense that it's decent in combat and trade, can be fitted out for exploration very nicely too. It is a bit unwieldy though. Why not pick up an asp? Fairly cheap, you keep your anaconda, and is a fun all rounder. Or even a cobra for nipping about in. I have all of the above (plus a type 6 purely for mining) and it's nice to just switch out

Still remember the cobra - the sense of achievement when I finally got the cash to buy one after endless trade hops in the hauler.

Anaconda just feels too-big. Mind you I haven't tried combat since the introduced huge lasers. Maybe a quick bit of res action to get the feel for it.

Main love for the python was remembering what it was like pre-nerf - being able to get back there with engineering upgrades sounds lush. But I also love the idea of being able to launch fighters....

Don't forget large and huge multi cannons ;) I'm running a full multi cannon boat with just one large and two small beams.

Python does not support fighter bays :(, only:
Anaconda
Beluga
Federal Corvette
Federal Gunship
Imperial Cutter
Keelback
Type 9

That's awesome! How long did it take to get there?

I picked up an FDL for combat. I'm really disappointed at just how underwhelming the Python is for combat now. When I was saving up to buy one ages ago, it was an amazing machine and a great all-rounder. Now in combat it's very tame and doesn't last as long as I'd hoped. I've stashed it away for now but I'm really considering selling it back for the cash for now and picking up a Type 9 for trading again. It's a 10% loss on items I sell, right? Any tips for maximising returns when I sell? Is it still better to sell each upgraded component first and then the ship? I bought the ship with a 15% discount. Must I sell it back at a 15% system or can I do it anywhere?

You can sell it anywhere, but the price you get back is going to be based on what you paid. If I were you I'd get over to morai fairly quickly and ship over a couple hundred tonnes of tantalum so you can get the 43m reward. That's like one or two trips (you can buy tantalum 1 jump away) and you can keep your python and get a fdl as well.

Currently going for that 50% so I can bag the 86m payout. I think it's currently at about 1600 tonnes for that.

Started the day finally finishing my grind and bought a brand spanking new Imperial Clipper, but ended up with barely 2 million left in the bank. I check the community goal and panicked when I saw the amount of progress over night. I quickly shifted a paltry 270 tonnes of Superconductors, mostly done in the final 90 minutes, and came away with 68 million credits! Pittance to the hardcore among you I know, but I'm off to drown myself in booze, drugs and slave girls. :D

To think back. Last Tuesday, when I logged back in for the first time since December 2014, I only had 200k, a Hauler and not one single clue as to what I was going to do!

Thought I'd have another crack at this as its been a while and had a few updates now.

Bought myself another Fer De Lance as its been beefed up a lot since I had one.

Garaged my Python and stripped it down to pay for maxing out the FDL.

Will take her out for a bounty hunting session soon.

I'd love to get into this however steam seems to be preventing me from buying this at the moment! grrrr.

Once I do get the play this it'll be with an xbox controller for a while until I can invest in something better. anyone currently use an xbox controller and if so does it work ok?

Some great updates guys, nice.

Ref the Python. IMO, it's now a GOOD armed trader, but certainly not a ship I'd choose for combat. For all that, it's probably one of my most heavily used ships. Brilliant all-rounder for completing missions and mid-level haulage. The key point being that it's medium sized, so can deal with outposts, unlike say a Conda.
My Python is now fully engineered, so has a 24LY jump range, even with a full compliment of weapons, military armour etc. I tend to run away from anything genuinely dangerous like an FDL or above, but I can easily handle ships like a Asp or lower.

Away for a few days. Think I'll go investigated the community goals a bit more when I get back.

BTW, dumped the DK2 and have gone for a good 27" monitor. Couldn't get ED working as my base unit is ancient and has no USB3. Couldn't get the USB3 PCIE card working, so gave up in the end. Was brilliant with DCS.
