Out of interest Solaris, what sort of SP are you at the moment?

I'm only around 12m SP myself, but keep getting the urge to start training for caps.. Fairly sure I should wait a bit longer, but I'm getting impatient :)

why do you need a capital ship?

chances are at that SP level you will not have the sufficient support skills to use a cap ship efficiently. Basically it will die a horrible death.

If your going for a freighter then yeah sure thats alright since its not going to be a combat vessel.

However a dread and a carrier is a rather large commitment as well as investment! and to just have one in your station spinning around is a waste.

Well, I don't need a capital ship at all. A carrier would be very, very handy though so I wouldnt have to rely on alliance to move my ships. Mainly though, it would just be to join in ops in a different capacity than just support.

Obviously I would need to train quite a bit of support skills before it was worth buying one, thats why I said I keep having the urge to start training for them - To stop my current skill plan (focusing on <Cruiser and core skills atm) and make one which will enable me to get in to a cap + fly it well.

I'm too busy having fun with Cruisers and Battlecruisers. For the past 12 months I have been focusing my skills on maxing out support, so that it makes me live that little bit longer, or quickly switch ship to either recon or support.
I am still yet to fly a Battleship, but I might do so in the near future, but only when the skills are maxed to support it.
My problem is that I never play the game long enough to earn any decent iskies. :(

ull need at least 30/40m sp before training for caps. Both my chars had 52m and only then was i going for caps(before I unsubbed)

Max out all the racial support skills for armour or shields and ofc engineering, electronics and navigation before even contemplating a combat capital. id even say good rigg skills are a must. the secret to a good eve char is focus in one direction. lots of lvl5s are worth the grind.

If you want to get a freighter then make and alt. you can haul semi afk while ratting/mining on the other char.

tbh flying caps is not fun.

That is the main thing stopping me tbh. But judging from the other responses, Ill stick on the course I'm going at the moment and not make a b-line for them. At the moment interceptors are my prefered pvp ship, quite a far cry from what flying a cap would be like I imagine :D

Thoughts on PI?

It's not exactly "planetary interaction" in the way I thought, just seems like a bolt on interface. Still, something else to do.

Anyone training skills for it?

Ive been playing around with it on the test server a lot. Its certainly something interesting and i can see it going far.

I probably will take part in this on the side, as long as i dont have to revisit the colony every couple of hours like i do so far on the test server, its just annoying coming back every 6 hours to move around extractors, even the 15 hour cycles are too short tbh.

One thing i was hoping for was the ability to see other peoples colony's on the planet instead of it being instanced like it is now, however seems like that wont be changing for this release. Hopefully they will release some sort of trade hub for planets that would make it a bit more player intractable in my eyes.

I really don't find the concept of PI, at least in the way in which CCP have done it, appealing. I'll probably get involved on my indy alt for some extra ISK, but thats about it. I don't find it particularly exciting prospect.

I've just got Cruiser 5, which has seemed to open up a good few doors. Now starts a long grind of polishing off support skills I should have sorted a long time ago - aside from some obvious stuff, I'm quite keen to put some work into armour and drones to make switching to gallente in the future an easy hop (Caldari main char.)

But the idea of a flying a carrier really does appeal - purely for logistics purposes. I've not got to the stage that I can comfortably afford to lose one, so no PVP in it - but after my current plan that'll definately be on the cards. According to Evemon I'd be looking at 112 days which isn't bad at all.

My main it getting close to 20 million now, with my two alts just gont passed 10 and 12 million.

If you concentrate on caps throughout the life of a toon, it can get there pretty quick. Its when you start training for other random stuff that wont benefit the capital that you need half a bazillion SP. My revelation toon will have all skills that support capacitor to 5, all armor skills to 5, AWU 5, Spaceship Command 5 Bship 5, and gunnery skills... If thats all you aim for, you don't need amazing skills.

Oh... and bouncers are in the pipeline but will come later...

I've been playing MMOs for years, back when UO was the front runner, been through SWG, WOW, DAoC, PE, a few asian F2P and WOW, WOW, oh and WOW again. It doesn't look like Stargate worlds or Star Wars NotOR is going to surface anytime soon, shame!

Anyway, I was bored at the weekend and was looking through my old games, and managed to find an unopened a copy of 'Apocrypha' or whatever its called so installed it on the g/f's PC then on mine, so were both up and running going through the tutorial, but, I've got a few issues.

1. Is there some kind of 3rd party UI modifier or setting to adjust the scale of the UI - I'm thinking similar to the WOW scale UI setting. The text is so small, I realise you can alter the text size of the chat windows and the text width slightly but it doesn't really do the job.

2. Its such a steep learning curve having never played the game before, is there some decent links that explain the essential stuff, or even a quick start guide - the official EVE site seems to waffle a fair bit.

3. Is it truly a 'sandbox' game? i.e when you've done all the starter bits do you have to start grouping with people etc etc, I know there is no level cap but there must come a point when you need to just do one thing repeatively to improve.

Cheers

1) never had an issue myself even at high resolutions so can't help.

2) Join the OCUK channel in game, any questions you can ask in there and someone will be able to help. Or you can join the HELP channel.

3) You don't have to do anything to improve, everything is skill based. So many ways to make money you just find something you like a do it. I've been playing for years, probably explored about 10% of the game.

You really need to do the tutorial completely to start to get a handle on how the game mechanics work. That's about the quickest quick guide you're going to get.

Other than the fact that it's got a lot of other people playing it, it's not really remotely like any other mmo you've played, try not to think of it in those terms.

Most new players do NPC missions to gain money initially, but there's nothing to stop you manufacturing, mining, running financial scams, scanning for stuff to steal, etc etc. It puts most sandbox games to shame.

Single most important thing though - get into a player corp. You will shortcut your learning curve by months by just being with other players and asking questions.

Finally, realise that Eve won't pander to your ego. Most mmo's give you the illusion of being powerful, important and central to the game. In Eve, it's just you and several hundred thousand other players, all trying to carve out their own little bit (or in some cases huge chunk) of the gameworld.

It's quite fun once you get into it :D

Lower the res is the only option. CCP don't let anything hook into or modify the client in any way so you're stuck with what you've got. I've never had an issue though, the game is mroe about the mechanics and less about the graphics.

Join a player corp fast, as its been said previously the ability to ask questions of experienced players is vital. This game is so complex, with the time based training system, very complex crafting and resource collection systems, even the missioning system is more than some people can cope with. There are guides for everything, google "eve new player guide" and start reading, then you can start reading guides getting into the nitty grittys of each area:

- Training
- Mining / Refining
- Missioning
- Fitting a ship
- How to fly PVP
- How to start a corp and make ISK
- Tech I, II, and III construction
- Wormholes
- Scams
- Trading
- Soverignty System
- Player owned Starbases

and the list goes on.

There is no true "grind" in eve, doing actions do not give you EXP, its all time based, the longer you play the better you become. This annoys some people and empowers others, the longer you play eve the more bragging rights you have and the less people want to take you on in a fight.

The only "grind" is making money, which can be a slow process at the start.

You have 3 real ways of making money.

- Mining and Crafting (Mine mins, build stuff, sell it)
- Killing NPC pirates (Money paid in bounties for each kill + for collecting loot and salvage when you sell it on)
- Playing the market (Buy cheap, freighter somewhere else, and sell for more)

If you want to get ISK fast you need to band into corporations, if everyone mines, shares the mins, shares blueprints, runs missions together etc you can get rich pretty quick, but beware that you have to be careful who you trust. Theivery and scams run rife in eve and are well within the game rules. And even to become a fully established miner / crafter / missioner can take months from the start of play due to the time based skill progression.

Also if you plan to fly PVP solo, you have a bigger pair than I, and it rarely works out at the start. Fleet battles form the main part of eve combat, its rarely 1v1, people usually have friends in fleets backing them up, its usually 20+v1, but can get seriously fun in a large alliance when its 300v300.

The true sandbox lies in 2 places, the market which is completely at the mercy of the players with an economy less stable than the New York Stock Exchange. And 0.0 space, which large alliances can take control of, fight for space, and wreak havok in. This is where I live, and this is why I love the game.

If something is too good to be true it normally is. In Eve a lot of people are out to get you from Pirates to scammers just be warned even your best friend can stab you in the back.

Then again their is nothing stopping you from being a pirate or a scammer
