Depends on the rest of your team, if you have a world class squad for instance there will be no player in the game that will be 6 - 8 stars. My Sunderland squad in 2012 for instance, they are mostly world class and my star players who are worth £25 million on paper (but I'd never sell them for less than £75 million) are 5 stars, and they are world players of the year and get golden boots and stuff.

Although if you had a League 2 squad and brought in a rubbish Premiership player, chances are he'll be 6-8 star as he'll be far better than the rest, but rated against world class players he'll probably have 1-2 stars.

messi was 5 star at barca, but now he's 4 at my club, how does that work?

and what do yo mean 6 - 8 star? i thought 5 was the highest?

Also comes down the quality of the person you are getting the information from. Judging Player Ability and Judging Player Potential is important here.

Nah, it goes up to 8 stars. Can have 1 - 8 star in Silver which means youth, and 1 - 8 star for adults (think it's over 18 year old).

Ahhh, thanks for that, I've been wondering about that myself :)

Hi guys (possible long post, sorry in advance!)

I'm in need of a bit of help/advice really. This is my first football manager game since the likes of Ultimate Soccer manager 98 (which i loved). I'm having difficulties adapting to this game. I started off a season with Arsenal, who have a fairly strong squad. I have a transfer budget of £25m as i didnt seem confident enough we'd win the league. From the month of July to September my results have been below average for a team of Arsenals potential! Lost to Boca in the friendly cup, lost to Sunderland, and Reading 3 -0, lost to Spurs 4-3 which the fans hated me for (i can sympathise).
I have tried various tactics and formations according to the opposition and pitch but the result always seems the same - i can almost predict when i'm going to concede. Attackers seem to run past my defence, or they stand still, or give the ball away. At the other end, my strikers are not scoring....enough.

I had a look at the transfer market and managed to sigh Jeremy Menez who i rotate with Eduardo from time to time, but cannot seem to find or a buy any decent strikers or defenders.

Should i stick to the same formation/tactics and squad so there is a bit of familiarity instead of rotation?

Could any recommend any advice or tactics to a rookie manager like myself?

Perhaps you need to make the defenders have a deeper defensive line.

And yes keep with the same formation and lineup for a few matches if you can to get the players used to the tactics. Try some of the tactics from the first page of this thread and see what they do. :)

Try a few tactics, theres one posted in this thread somewhere that seemed effective.

Could also be you're playing all stong attackers in midfield, rather than a good defensive, to hold up the ball.

Update on my Blue Square Premier game, im scoring goals everywhere!

Normally my strikers had stats of under 10 for finishing, until now, signed a few youngsters, and two on loan, they're scoring everywhere!

One of them is called Ephraim or something, has scored 2 hat tricks in two games, so far! In current game, its 4 goals come half time!

Then i have Andy Cole and Charlie Sheringham, which are doing OK so far. Cole scored 15+ so far too!

I should be pushing for play offs, hopefully.

Hi guys (possible long post, sorry in advance!)<QR>

The CM/FM series has been evolving over a period of 15-odd years, it is very complicated (and not entirely perfect). I've been playing it as since the Amiga days and it still sometimes baffles me as to why things sometimes don't work the way I expected. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes, and often times the tiniest little change can fix a very broken team, or break a very good team.

Whenever I start a new team I take some time to look at what I have; all the staff (what sort of play-style do my coaches prefer) and all the players (favoured positions, skills in certain areas) and try to pick a *very* basic formation based around that information. Then, play through the friendlies gently tweaking the sliders in the team options seeing how this effects performance. This takes a while but helps build a good understanding of the game and, more importantly, your team's dynamic.

You can also use someone else's tactic and fit your team around it. I've had mixed success with these in the past and these days prefer to make my own based on learning my team's relative strengths.

Read as much as you can (there's an awful lot of stuff out there) and just keep practising. Pick a practical formation and let your players get used to it over a few games.

There's a lot to learn but don't let it put you off, once you learn a few of the basics, things will start to click into place.

And welcome to the club. You'll never leave ;)

people like kaka and messi only have 4 or 5 stars, who's better ?

The only player I can find in my current game that has more than 5 stars, based on already having a world class team, is Silva who has 6 stars.

If you're a big team, its generally gonna be 5ish.

If you're say Newcastle (sorry Newc fans), and sign someone like Van der Vaart, Silva etc, they'll be more than 5*.
Correctissimo. :p

The stars for a player are related to your team. So if you have a super-duper Man Utd team with Ronaldo/Silva/Alves/Rooney/Aguero for example :o then not many other players would be better than yours.

Whereas if you are Fulham say ;) pretty much EVERY SINGLE player on the planet would be 5 stars or more. :p

And welcome to the club. You'll never leave ;)
As the Eagles once said/sang, "You can check out but you can never leave" :D

^ haha, how did i know that example would come up.

But yes, if you are Utd, there will be like one player that'll be very high star, if you sign him, that will be because he is most likely as good/better than what you have at the moment, with the ability to be better.

Example, im Sutton Utd in Blue Square Premier, and Andy Cole is 8 star for me, lmao.
