*** The Official Football Manager 2009 Thread ***

Im leaking a lot of goals now toward end of season things not working out to good just lost 1-0 to Wolves and out Fa Cup in 5th round. :(
Yeah, lots of people get that, it's mostly because they are very tired if they aren't rotated frequently through the season. What I tend to do is find a gap just after Christmas in game of somewhere between 7 and 12 days and give them a rest (CTRL + A on the squad screen, then right click on anyone and put them Training Schedule to "Rest" for 3 - 7 days). It really helps, also if I've progressed well through the League/FA cup and I'm in Europe I'll try to do it again around March time.

Anyone scoring a shed load of goals?
Marquinhos has 7 goals in 3 games so far for me this season :D

Pushing up direct play will lose you possession a lot and you will leak goals a lot, fast strikers will bury you. But you will score a few too.

I have the problem of not hitting target enough, but that's just my strikers and poor crossing stats.

Try 4-4-2 attacking, carew holding up ball still for gabby. Midfield of Young arrow forward-Reo-coker arrow back-Barry arrow forward-Milner arrow forward. 5 tempo, 14 width, Defenders mixed passing, midfield about 7/8, strikers 2-5 passing. Pitch size makes a difference, if its a large pitch, pushng up that much means you got HUGE gap behind the defenders, bet you get quite a few strikers breaking through. Push up on a small pitch, then use short passing, because as you are pushing up, your defence, midfield and attack are close to each other. You will also keep possession this way.

Thing with direct passing is you need good passers with the vision to pick out players, on small pitches it doesn't work so well as there's less space to play ball into. Basically, see your results and i bet you do worst on small pitches. But again, depends on team you're against.

Will be doing a proper season update soon but just had to post this...how about this for a result?

Thanks for the tatic help just swapped it but havnt done individual passing yet i put it all to 5 as didnt see this post but just beat Man Utd at home 2-1 and Huntelaar got mom. :)

I play 4-4-2 attacking but Reo-Coker pulling back as DM he his up in tackles/game chart in player stat section does good job and got Barry making forward runs all i changed is passing and defensive line to what you said seems to worked.

I played mixed for a while in first season and normal on everything, just takes a while to tweak things.

I play same tactic each match now pretty much, because it works so well.

I use these tactics now, basically work best, because they use the basic fundamentals the game is designed upon. I used Standard first season, but now use attack and it's best one for me, See:

Matt's V3 TTF Tactics

Edit: My advice for teams like villa with average to poor passing, is to stick to attack tactic there. You will lose maybe 25% of games due to just counter attacks and defenders fannying about with the ball. Against big teams they will counter and catch your pushing defence big style, but then they go into a normal tactic and you rip them apart. big games will always have several goals. Bit of tweaking though, i.e. adding tight marking, etc, i reckon you can avoid this.

Sunderland 6 - 0 M. Tel-Aviv

League
Everton 1 - 3 Sunderland
Sunderland 3 - 0 Chelsea

Finally found some sort of consistency;

Last few prem games;

Pompey 1 - 2 Fulham
Fulham 2 - 1 West Ham
Reading 0 - 4 Fulham
Blackburn 2 - 1 Fulham (late penalty :()
Man City 1 - 1 Fulham
Liverpool 1 - 1 Fulham

Also Managed two points this season against Man Utd, Chelsea is my next game, so far 3 points against them. Arsenal i also managed 3 points this season. And 4 points against Man City. Good season since having a terrible start :).

Sitting in 10th on 47pts, 6th is only on 51pts.

Huntelaar is 3rd top scorer, but hasn't scored in about 3-4 premiership games.

Ronaldo is having a stormer, 48 games, 38 goals, 24 assists. Adebeyour is on 42 apps, 35 goals too .

well im just starting my third season with man utd won the pl and CL again this year but have made a few additions to my squad. Due to the loan repayments as earlier mentioned im a bit of a saver when it comes to purchase costs and wages that i will pay.

Just released Sholes to save £60k a week, sold henry for 1mill to save another £55k a week and have also owen whose contrac was up and tbh i wasnt paying mor ethan £40k a week and he wanted £60 so i let him go. Other players out are Kallstrom £10.75 and acosta for £10m.

this left me witht he following squad

GK: Foster
RB: cicinho
RB: santon
CB: brown
CB: Vidic
CB: ferdinand
LB: Evra
LB: Oshea
RM: Ronaldo
LM: Nani
CM: Carrick
CM: Hargreaves
AM: van Der Vart
AM: Anderson
ST: Huntelaar
ST: Rooney
ST: Sturridge

so i was week on the wings and upfront.

Players in

Higuain £10m
David £5.5m (17 year old MC from almeria absolute quality)
Asenjo £7.25m
Ronaldinho £12m

and a few youngsters

Vasco Pinto from Porto £1.2m
Daniel Opare from RM £110k
Vaclav Kadlec from Sparta Prague £50k

so fairly well strengthened although im now having to play santon as a RM instead of RB due to not being able to sign a winger.

so far have started the seaosn very brightly my players seem to have adapted to the tactic i use better this year and im not struggling to score as much as i was.

so far played 4 games scored 10 conceded 1

so looking quite positive for this year. Ronaldinho is superb playing on the left wing though and well worth the money although he is 30 !

so finally starting to enjoy the game a bit more however i do think there needs to be some adjustments to the match engine by SI in terms of AI scoring and us scoring/.

Just finished my 2012/13 season.

Finished 9th this time, so i've stepped up every season basically.

I'll be losing;

Briggs, Ignasevich, Harris, Dempsey, Berezutskiy, Saviola and Arshavin all on frees.

Signed Deco as a backup player, and a couple VERY good prospects.

Haven't posted much for a while. In second season with Pato signing for £10m. :D Was unhappy at AC Milan so I nabbed him. Huntelaar isn't working for me. :(

Asenjo has arrived and is brilliant I think. Heard about Fazio and he looks brilliant judging by a screenshot syke has sent moi on MSN. Got Tug's FM09 training going now and seeing more players with more training improvements. Might try the Matt's TTF v3 tactics out and if I'm happy start a new game with what I've learned about the ins and out of FM09. :)

And now over to syke. ;)

Made some AMAZING signings this season.

First off it was Renato Augusto who was out of contract, snapped him up. The next was getting Eden Hazard who looks a good AM/FC, it gets better! I noticed Andres Iniesta was on a FREE, so also snapped him up, and then signed Fazio for about £9m over 12 months, and Jesus Navas about £10-11m over 12 months. To add to that, Deco as a backup.

Happy days!

Although, Akinfeev went for £31m upfront, £10m over 12 months (not too bad i guess), so using Asenjo now, see if hes as good as you lot say, hes been on my bench for long enough :p.

Fazio is indeed good, just signed him (£12m) and Sakho to be my future defence partnership :) That's cheap for Pato but unlucky about Huntelaar - Rooney and Berbatov are just not consistent goalscorers for me any more, Rooney never has been but plays well and others score the goals instead, Berbatov scored 33 Premiership goals in my first season but then only 16 in my second :(

Transfers, beginning of third season as Man Utd:

In
Federico Fazio - £12m (DC, Sevilla)
Mamadou Sakho - £25m (DC, PSG - When the offer was any less they asked for £37m+, but their board automatically accepted £25m. Ouch. I should have bought him right at the beginning of my game)
Igor Akinfeev - £19m (GK, Moscow)
Georginio Wijnaldum - Free (AM RLC, Feyenord - His contract was up)

Out
Michael Carrick £25m (Roma - he actually went in January)
Jonny Evans - £7m (Sunderland)
Tomasz Kuszcack - £4m (Fiorentina)
James Chester - £550k (Blackpool)
12 more reserve players released on a free, I had too many reserves that were never going to get into the first team.
Edwin Van Der Sar and Ryan Giggs retired, hired both of them as coaches - VDS is a 7* goalkeeping coach and Giggs 7* at ball control.

Current first team and cover:

Akinfeev (Fiorillo/Foster)

Rafinha (Brown/Rafael) - Ferdinand (Fazio) - Vidic (Sakho) - Evra (Fabio/O'Shea)

Ronaldo (Giovinco) - Hargreaves/Camacho (He progressed really quickly) - Anderson (Assulin/Wijnaldum) - Messi (Nani)

Rooney (Tevez) - Berbatov (Balotelli)

Managed to agree a signing of Ben Arfa, tried Bojan but he wants more than £105k and thats all i can offer :(! Even £800k under my adjusted wage budget!

Snippety snip snip!
Nice update. :) Agree about Sakho. Get him asap otherwise his fee will rocket.

Currently I use Sakho/Evans as my future DC partnership to replace Rio/Vidic in the long run. But I think Evans is behind Sakho in terms of CA and probably doesn't have the PA Sakho has so Fazio/Sakho as DC pairing with Evans as a backup player could work. :)

I do the same as you with the reserves. Loads that just will never get a look in for the first XI. Even as an injury cover or what have you. Sometimes I release the ones with low values as I'll not get anything like a decent fee for them. Same for ones nearing contract end. That player will get peeved and leave for a free but will fester in the reserves team, something I don't want. Personally I don't think a reserves team for a club like Man Utd should have anything put potentially good youngsters not yet ready for first team football.

I think in FM series generally you'll get VDS/Giggs/Neville to stay as coaches and join Ole as legends coaching at OT. :) I don't think there is a good chance of getting Scholes to stay though. :(

I was thinking about that today actually. If anyone can get Scholes to stay as a coach then they have VDS to coach young GKs. Neville to coach defenders. Giggs to coach wingers. Scholes to coach midfielders and Ole to coach strikers. All positions coached by ex-Utd legends.

Same :( 12 games, 0 goals, 0 assists, average rating of 5.97

Think I'll get rid of him in Jan window.
Slightly better for me. He's scored goals and has a rating in the mid to high 6s I think. Just that he wants to play in more competive matches and has to dislodge Rooney/Tevez/Berba and compete with Pato. I don't think Huntelaar is good enough to make a permanent starter ahead of Rooney/Tevez/Berba who can work well and score goals for me. Huntelaar just doesn't take his chances when I give him games. :(

i find huntelaar very hit and miss tbh, in the two seasons i have had him this is the result

which isnt great but then again none of my forwards have been banging loads in and;p it averages to 1 in every 2 games which most managers would be happy with from any player, however i like my strikers to average a goal again in previous versions of FM

Rooney scored a lot less and with about the same ratings, however my forward play seems to be getting better this year so fingers crossed.

well berba was woeful for me in the first seaosn so he went fro £35 mill to RM :p

his stats from history pl 20, sc 6, 3 assists verage 6.81 :(

Sounds like my typical striker at Fulham :p.

Huntelaar scored 4 goals in 9 in first season, then 17 in 30, 20 in 34 in last season. More overall, but thats just league. Atm hes on 5 goals in 5 league games.
