***The Official Guitar Thread***

I really wish my lead guitarist would get one because he uses an Auto Wah and it's never set right eg the opening to Enter Sandman.

Autowah has its place maybe when you are consistently sweeping but for anything else I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. I don't really like anything like that though tbh I guess it comes to having a classical background and having it driven into me the need to control things very precisely and to strive for the difference between 99.9% and 100%.

The thing is he is undoubtedly one of the best guitarists in Stoke having been in Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Deep Purple/Rainbow tribute bands but he uses this bloody Auto Wah.
He has a guitar sound every guitarist would die for but still he uses the Auto Wah.

You watching Guitar Star this year? Some pretty good talent there. That one chap though is very very annoying. I loved the way Milos put him down and was like "Hmm you are a little bit ... self indulgent".

Yeah but I haven't been able to get my hands on 4 onwards.
That old Blues guy on slide is superb, I wasted a lot of time on You Tube.

Silly boy, just downloaded them from You Tube.

I am up to 5 now so we'll see who they chose.

The girl so far for me is very interesting technique wise but is somewhat limited and samey.
The guy who dropped out last season and came back the same but maybe not as good as the girl.
Zane is bloody annoying but very very talented. But he comes from a major music background and has had a lot of education - I feel he should have got his chance that way and shouldn't be on the show tbh.
Billy with his hat is pure raw talent. He is novel for a classical player to be a composer when of recent times they just play what is put in front of them. His technique isn't quite there but he is a very good player.
The other kid hasn't done so much so far for me but you can tell he has a lot more to come. Another one who I think will benefit from the process.
The old guy with the slide - OMG I like this one so much - this is what it should be about bringing someone like that to the big stage he is exceptionally good.
The middle-aged jazz guy is clean and efficient with a wonderful tone but has a very limited palette - I don't think he should progress.
The classical chap is screwed basically. Milos is a perfectionist and whilst the chap is playing stuff way harder to play than everyone else by quite a stretch the fact he has one of the harshest critical eyes from the same discipline as him on the panel will tell I reckon. He will however benefit from that criticism because in fairness it's spot on.

For me the ones that should go through:

The old guy - he's already the complete performer and deserves his chance.
The girl - interesting but she needs to widen what she does it's very limited.
The two kids - both supremely talented.
Zane - that annoying I even remember his name but he can play.

I want the old guy to win I hope Zane doesn't win!

I nearly agree with everything you say and I know who goes through, I've just started 6.

I just don't get the young rock lad, I was embarrassed watching him play Satch Boogie which was awful but for some reason these guys look at somebody playing single notes on a heavy sound and it makes them smile. I don't get it.

Update,
That Jake just came alive in the studio - a bit but Billy was awesome.

I've had technical difficulties with a Mesa Boogie head I ordered (JP-2C) - replacement coming today fingers crossed it's 100% in order this time!!

Just watched the next one.

I think there is more to Jake than we've seen so far - he looks a bit like Josh Homme too - which can't do him no harm! He quite obviously can play but yes his interpretation of Satch Boogie was not good at all however I don't think the others were any better tbh. The classical chap played something insanely difficult and the start was very very messy. The finger/percussive guy just dropped the ball completely and the jazz guy threw in some nice changes but again I'm with Milos on that one 'boring'.

My lad keep saying he wants to go in a few years if they are still doing it. I am not sure if there is a minimum age on it.

Mesa Boogie *drool*

If only my wife would let me buy such things for me. I got my lad one of these a while back - not bad for his first electric: http://www.prsguitars.com/sestandard24/ - she had no problems with that. I sense a degree of injustice in our house.

My only Mesa Boogie story.
Back in the early 80s I went with my mate to Wishers in Derby who had one of the very first Mesa Boogie's in the country, it was £1600. He was playing with it for well over an hour just trying to get a decent sound but gave up. We then walked in another room where there was a 30 watt Valve Marshall, he plugged into that and bought it.

Obviously Mesa's have come a long way since then.

I thought Mesa are infamous for being difficult to dial in, hence there is a section in the manual with lots of suggested settings.

With all the knobs and the 5 band EQ and the way the amp is built, where the gain stages are, it is different to a Marshal or a Tweed Deluxe.

Well I wouldn't know from experience unless my lad asks my wife for one in which case we'd have one the next day. :(:(:(

I have to play nice to just get a pedal. Mesa Boogie amps aren't the kind of thing you can just sneak in and pretend it's been around for 2 years. But yes from what I can tell they are twitchy.

I posted this in the things I've bought thread in GD recently, but having finally had a chance to give it a proper go, wow ! Seriously, I am so impressed with it -

New rule.

1 pair of shoes for you.

1 pedal for me.

:D

Lokai - I've got the C version of that one and it's awesome.

And Raymond I think I may implement your advice.

And I've now finished guitar star ...

Well he has the best but omg so annoying

I can't moan really I got to see Pat Metheny last month and that ticket was £150 - was worth every penny though. His sense of dynamics, colour and phrasing were just out of this world. I've seen some great guitarists in my time but I can honestly say I've seen none better than that performance. Would be great to see some of my other favourites in such an intimate surrounding (was at Ronnie Scotts).

Oh, he won :(

I stood about 10 foot from Tommy Emmanuel for a whole concert - that was magical.

Yep, and deservedly so really on playing ability. Technically and theoretically he was well above all the others. You look at the two young kids and the girl and what they played wasn't totally controlled and the old chap although I loved what he did it was say lacking in the dynamic control that Zane could and did produce. He was fluent from improvisation in both rhythm and melody. He had the variety of technique that the others could not get close to. That is no disrespect to them though as they were all excellent players.

However, the fact is he came from an established music family and had clearly already had an extensive education which he had graduated from. He was also using very very expensive guitars. That means whilst he was the best it was hardly fair, in my opinion, and in my eyes against the spirit of the competition. Who are next years entrants going to include if they continue that trend a final of Milos, Satch and Robert Cray?!?

I've got tickets to see Tommy when he tours here at the start of next year. I was also pretty close to Vai (Bristol) when he did the Passion and Warfare tour a bit back. Tommy Emmanuel is just so incredible. Last time he was over he my lad got to jam with him! I got to see Stevie Ray Vaughan play once - was with his brother - that was mindblowing. I saw Satch when I was 19 I think and was close enough to nick one of his plectrums when he leaned over. :D

Nice! Get's expensive quickly though I bet! I feel sorry for you guys there is something to be said for being classically trained and the rest of the time a jazz player as for the former I only need one guitar and for the later guitar, amp and a nice chorus! However, saying all that my dream is to get a Greg Smallman classical but I am not so sure that is ever going to happen ...
