The upgrade program includes £199 Apple Care+

Exactly. The cheapest "credit" price for the X is £46.50 so its more like £36.50 for the EE plan.

If I end up getting the X it would be sim free and I would use my £13/month three sim making the monthly cost over 2 years £54.60. Thats unlimited everything apart from data which is 12gb/month. Netflix isnt counted towards your data allowance as well.

That's a fair price.

I'm worried about what good conditioned is. I don't use a case so I have a few small scuffs but that's it.

I think there is a disclaimer about what is considered normal wear and tear and they don't mind if there are tiny scuffs and micro abrasions. They just won't accept it if you have dropped it and deformed the case or chipped anything.

I'd say as long as the phone isn't heavily scratched, screen is in tact and it's not bent they'll take it. They'll all get sent to refurb anyway and sold in the refurbished store.

I don't know why they care about damage to the case unless they assume that its likely to have damaged or shortened the shelf life of the other components like the camera as a result.

They clearly replace the screen, case and battery when they refurb these units.

As long as the screen isn’t smashed or the case bent you’ll be fine. Even if the screen was smashed you’d just have to pay the £25 Apple Care screen replacement cost.

Who the hell buys on contract when you can pay up front and get a SIM only deal?

Same reason why people don't buy a house outright and get a mortgage instead. People don't often have £1000 to hand but can afford £60 a month. They will see they already spend £50 a month on their contract, what's another £10.

Just think of it like renting a Phone from Apple. You just hand in your old phone and get a new one and the payment plan is adjusted depending on which new model you get.
Shocking when you put it in those terms but you're not wrong. Reminds me of these PCP plans for new cars, you never own the darn things and are constantly shelling out.

So you're comparing a mortgage to a hand held piece of tech?

His analogy is absolutely right.

Phones, cars, homes etc. all are aspects of life which are available on credit and dependent on your spending power, you may need to tap into finance to enable you to access said items.

When you consider that some people are finding it difficult to even scrape through £10s of k for a deposit towards a house, £1000 pieces towards a piece of "tech" is quite a lot of money in that context.

The reality somewhat different though. A mortgage is the only debt I ever had and that was only over 10 years.

Poor you, some people buy it outright and sees you being silly paying interest for 10 years.

Same as you looking at people who get phone on contract.

See how the principle works?

I haven't been on a proper contract since the iPhone 4. Started buying them outright after that point. But was just pointing out that the Apple Upgrade Plan is 18 months where as the EE deal was 24 months. Just something to consider when working out how much you'll pay overall.

Even if I was to get the 256GB iPhone X on the AUP with my Three sim-only contract (300 minutes/unlimited data/unlimited texts/30GB tethering) I'd still be better off than doing a EE 24 month contract.
